I turned around.

Alessio stood under the market’s string lights, his suit jacket draped over his arm. He looked completely out of place.

The vendor looked at him, then at me, a wide smile spreading across her face.

“This your husband?”

The tips of Alessio’s ears turned red again.

He walked up to the stall and studied the row of cheap rings with the same intensity he would give a diamond exhibition.

The vendor asked, “Sir, buying one for your wife?”

Alessio shook his head.

“For myself.”

The vendor froze.

I froze, too.

Alessio picked out the simplest silver band from the tray.

The vendor hesitated.

“That one might be too small.”

Alessio tried to put it on.

She was right. It was too small.

The ring got stuck at the second knuckle of his ring finger. It wouldn’t go on, and it wouldn’t come off.

The vendor started to panic.

“Don’t pull! I’ll get some soapy water.”

Alessio looked down at his trapped finger, his expression uncharacteristically stiff.

I watched for a second, then couldn’t help but laugh.

He looked up at me.

The market lights reflected in his eyes, and the rare flash of embarrassment on his face made him seem suddenly, startlingly real.

The vendor brought over the soapy water, and after a brief struggle, the ring was finally removed.

A red mark circled Alessio’s knuckle.

But he still picked out another one, a size larger this time.
