I went to work, just like any other day.

At noon, as I passed the breakroom, I heard a few colleagues talking in hushed tones.

“Did you hear? They changed the seating at the Ricci gala.”

“To who?”

“Alessio’s wife. I thought Sofia was supposed to be at the head table? They changed the whole lineup last night.”

“The lives of the rich and famous…”

I walked in with my mug.

They immediately fell silent.

My assistant came over and asked quietly, “Verona, are you really not going?”

“I’m not.”

“But it’s the Ricci anniversary gala. Every media outlet in the city will be there.”

I poured my coffee.

“Then I have even less reason to go.”

If Alessio wanted to make amends, that was his business.

I wasn’t going to stand in front of a wall of cameras in a designer gown and wait for the world to decide if I deserved to be put back in my place.

At five o’clock, I received a text from an unknown number.

Sofia.

“Are you happy now? He’s willing to humiliate his own family for you.”

I deleted it.

She sent another.

“If you don’t show up tonight, he’ll be a laughingstock. You see, Verona? You could never handle being the Ricci wife.”

I didn’t reply.

After work, I didn’t go back to my apartment. Instead, I went to the street market in my old neighborhood.

I hadn’t been there in a long time. Half the stalls had changed.

But the one that sold rings was still there.

The vendor, wearing an apron, was helping a young girl pick out a hair clip.

I walked over, and she looked at me for a moment before her eyes lit up.

“It’s you. The newlywed.”

I smiled.

“You have a good memory.”

“Of course I do. You picked out that $29.99 ring like it was a family heirloom.”

My fingertip brushed over a tray of rings on the counter.

“Do you still have that style?”

She rummaged around for a while, then shook her head.

“That one’s discontinued. But I have something similar.”

She pulled out a row of thin bands.

“Price has gone up, though. $39.99.”

I was about to speak when a deep voice came from behind me.

“Do you have any for $29.99?”
