Alessio closed his eyes.

“It’s time you all remembered who the Mrs. Ricci has been for the last two years.”

He hung up and turned to me.

“Verona, I will make a public statement.”

“About what?”

“The ring. The gala. Sofia.”

“Alessio.”

I looked at him.

“Those are things you should have dealt with two years ago. They are not a consolation prize for me.”

His face paled.

I stood, walked to the door, and opened it.

“It’s late. Go home.”

Alessio didn’t move.

His gaze fell on the entryway console.

The old wooden box was there.

I must have left it open when I was tidying up.

A corner of a red, gold-foiled invitation was sticking out.

I followed his gaze and was about to close it.

But he was already stepping toward it.

He didn’t rummage through the box. He just looked down.

It was one of the wedding invitations from two years ago.

I had planned to send it to my college roommate.

But the wedding was rushed, and the Ricci family said the guest list was full. I didn’t need to invite too many people from my side.

So the invitations were never sent.

Alessio reached out and gently lifted the top one.

Inside, beneath the printed names, I had handwritten a short note.

“Verona and Alessio sincerely invite you to be one of the first to witness our wedding.”

Alessio stared at the words, and his eyes slowly reddened.
