This time, Alessio didn’t try to stop me.

He just stood there, clutching that thin silver band, as if he had suddenly lost his footing.

Sofia was still crying.

“Alessio, you see? She doesn’t care about this marriage at all.”

“If she cared, how could she leave so easily?”

Alessio lifted his head.

The look he gave her was so cold it cut her off mid-sentence.

“Easily?”

He opened his palm, holding the thin silver band up for her to see.

“She wore this to twenty-seven public events for my family.”

Sofia’s face went rigid.

Alessio continued, “You held her ring, sat beside my mother, and took her place at the head table.”

Sofia opened her mouth.

“I…”

“Sofia.”

For the first time, Alessio used her full name.

“Stop pretending you’re innocent.”

His voice was quiet, but in the suddenly silent entryway, it was the only sound besides the rain.

“The only innocent person in this room just left.”

I walked out under the portico, and the driver opened an umbrella for me.

The curtain of rain blurred the lights of the building behind me.

I didn’t look back.

As the car pulled away from the curb, I saw a figure run out into the downpour.

Alessio.

He stood in the rain without an umbrella, still holding that cheap ring.

Rainwater streamed down his hair.

He looked like he wanted to call out to me, but as the car turned the corner, he stopped.

I looked away.

My phone vibrated.

A photo from an unknown number.

It was a close-up of Alessio and Sofia, backstage at the wedding.

Sofia sat beside him, her head bowed as she straightened his cuff.

The wedding ring was already on her hand.
