I looked down at my bare finger. Suddenly, I felt exhausted.

I pulled my suitcase toward the door.

“The person you need to deal with right now is her, not me.”

His face was grim.

“You’re a part of this.”

“My part is over.”

I took the thin silver band from my bag.

I had been clutching it in my palm, and the edges had pressed a faint, aching line into my skin.

Alessio’s gaze dropped to it.

I placed the ring in his hand.

“I’m returning this to you.”

His palm stiffened.

The $29.99 ring lay beside his expensive watch, looking so cheap it was almost comical.

Sofia saw it, and a flicker of contempt crossed her face.

I pretended not to notice.

“For the past two years, the Ricci family needed a wife wearing a wedding ring. I played the part.”

I looked at Alessio.

“Now, you don’t need me to anymore.”

Alessio’s fingers slowly closed around the ring, as if he were afraid it would fall.

His throat worked.

“Verona, I never asked you to keep up appearances for anyone.”
