The moment I pushed open the door to the private room, delicate, glittering streamers drifted into my face.

Through the colorful strands, I saw Carrion holding that Omega close and kissing her tenderly.

All my friends had their phones raised, recording their sweet moment for them.

But the perfect scene shattered the instant I appeared.

When they saw me, everyone drew in a sharp breath without meaning to.

They looked away in a panic. Not one of them dared to meet my eyes.

The Omega glanced at Carrion and asked, confused, “Honey, is she one of our pack members too? Why does everyone look so upset the second she walks in?”

“Madeline, she is—”

I did not give Carrion the chance to lie. I stared straight at Madeline and said, “I’m Carrion’s mate. I know the two of you have been in love for eight years, but he and I have been in love for twelve.”

“If you don’t believe me, I can show you the videos in my camera roll.”

I opened my camera roll, and the proof of our twelve years of love was laid bare in front of everyone.

At our senior-year college-prep assembly, Carrion had been the student speaker. After his speech, he confessed his feelings for me in front of the entire school.

Inside the dimly lit pack house, a drunk Carrion had held me and sobbed until he could barely breathe. He made me turn on the camera, then swore into the lens.

“One day, I’ll make Nellie Vesper the Luna every pack envies.”

At the celebration banquet after our pack expanded its territory, Carrion and I had been surrounded by our friends. Blessings rang out around us, along with endless teasing for us to seal the mate bond as soon as possible.

This time, Carrion did not look at the camera. His eyes were fixed entirely on me.

“Of course,” he said. “When Nellie turns thirty, we’ll officially hold our bonding ceremony.”

And today was my thirtieth birthday.

Yet on the very day we had agreed to become mates, he had vanished for an entire day.

He had held a bonding ceremony with an Omega and made her his rightful Luna.

The last video ended.

The room went so quiet that even breathing sounded painfully sharp.

The people standing there included my best friend, Irinda, and pack members I knew well.

Madeline stepped halfway out from behind Carrion, as if she had finally gathered her courage.

“Nellie, I’m sorry you feel so helpless and hurt. I truly do feel for you.”

“But no matter what, I am already Carrion’s mate, and I will face this with him. Whatever you want, just name it. We’re willing to offer every resource Nightfall Pack has as compensation.”
