“Milo. Cookout tonight?”

I leaned over the yard wall.

Milo popped up on the other side and glanced toward my gate. “Those two are still out there? Graham looks

like he’s about to lose it.”

“Ignore them.” I yawned. “You grab the meat. I’ll handle the grill.”

“Deal!” Milo vaulted over the wall with his guitar tucked under his arm.

Night came.

We set up the grill in the yard.

Pork belly popped and sizzled, the smell drifting everywhere.

Milo perched on a stool, strumming his guitar and singing something light and easy.

I was stretched out in the rocking chair, beer in hand, tapping my foot along.

For once, I actually felt something close to peace.

Crash.

The gate flew open.

Graham stormed in, eyes wild.

He grabbed Milo by the collar and hauled him off the stool.

“Stay away from her!”

His voice cracked on the roar. “She’s my fiancée!”

Milo shoved him off. “Ex–fiancée! She dumped you. Get it through your head!”

“I’ll break your jaw.”

“Graham.”

One word. Ice.

His fist stopped mid–swing.

He turned.

“Let go of him. And get out.”

His eyes were raw, red–rimmed, barely holding.

“You’re choosing him over me?” His voice broke open. “Tell me what to do. Anything. You want my life? It’s

yours.”

“What would I do with that?”

I got up and walked to him.

I looked him dead in the eye.

“You think an apology resets everything? That you can show up and say sorry and I’ll be standing right where you left me?”

“Who do you think you are?”

I pointed at the gate.

“I’m saying this one last time. Get out. Don’t come back. You’re exhausting.”
