Callie’s face froze visibly, but she recovered quickly.

“That’s obviously because I’m an adult with a stronger metabolism. My body is processing the venom faster, while Leo is just a child, so it’s hitting him harder. That’s why our symptoms look different.”

“Besides, I already got the anti-venom and I’m fine. That proves it’s the correct treatment.”

Dr. Harrison nodded along frantically. “Miss Hanish is absolutely correct. This…”

Before he could finish, a man in a black trench coat strode into the ER, flanked by four bodyguards.

The billionaire Orion Ashford looked at his son on the hospital bed, his jawline locked in a tense, rigid line. “What’s going on? Why hasn’t he been given the anti-venom yet?”

Callie threw herself toward him, trembling violently as she sobbed.

“Orion! This vet student is refusing to let the doctors treat Leo. I caught the cobra myself, but she keeps insisting it was a king cobra. She wants them to pump him full of a totally different anti-venom. She’s actively trying to kill him…”

Orion didn’t even look at her.

He took a step forward, his cold, piercing gaze locking onto my face. “You claim the snake that bit my son isn’t the one in the bag. What’s your proof?”

The Pomeranian was losing its mind, jumping and barking frantically at his feet. Orion! Orion! I told her! I saw the whole thing with my own eyes!

Too bad Orion couldn’t hear a word it said.

His frigid glare pressed down on me with suffocating intensity.

Proof?

How could I possibly have proof? I couldn’t exactly tell him a dog told me.

No one would believe that.

Seeing my silence, a flash of smug satisfaction crossed Callie’s eyes.

“I asked her for proof earlier, and instead of giving any, she tried to turn everyone against me by claiming I wanted to hurt Leo. She’s intentionally stalling his treatment!”

“Orion, it’s been almost an hour since Leo was bitten. We need to administer the anti-venom right now.”

Orion turned to look at Callie. “You seem to be in quite a hurry.”

His voice was entirely devoid of emotion, yet it made Callie flinch.

“I… I’m just worried about Leo. I’m an adult, and even after getting the anti-venom, I’m still feeling dizzy.”

Orion ignored her and turned to me. “I reviewed the estate security footage. Leo ran into a blind spot, so the cameras caught nothing. Did you witness something?”

As I scrambled to think of an explanation, the Pomeranian barked again.

Coco! Find Coco! That stray cat in the garden—Leo loves feeding her, and she loves Leo right back!

After Leo was bitten, I saw Coco chase after that snake. A bunch of other strays went with her. They’ll definitely avenge Leo!

A stray cat?

As a vet student, I knew animal behavior inside out. A cat’s reflexes are ten times faster than a snake’s; a snake stands no chance against an agile feline.

If the Pomeranian was right, that cat would have tracked the real snake down.

I looked up at Orion, my confidence completely restored.

“Mr. Ashford, the cameras might have missed it, but you can send your men to search the perimeter of the garden and the outside fence. Focus on where the stray cats gather. The snake that actually bit your son will be there.”

Callie’s expression shattered. “Are you insane?! The snake is right here in this bag. Why would you send people to look for another one? You’re clearly…”

I cut her off with a sharp laugh. “Miss Hanish, you seem incredibly energetic for someone who claims to be dizzy. What exactly are you afraid of? Finding the real snake, or finding something else?”

“You…” She then seemed to realize something and forced herself to calm down. “I have nothing to fear. My conscience is completely clear. But if anything happens to Leo because of your delays, you will pay the price.”
