The next morning, we packed our bags and left for our honeymoon.

At the same time, Rowan’s company came under pressure from the Rainer Group.

He was swamped in his office, scrambling to put out fires.

Then, for no reason at all, he opened his phone and scrolled through social media.

He saw my post with Bryce and couldn’t believe his eyes.

Clutching at a shred of hope, he texted me with trembling fingers.

[Did you two actually get married? Are you lying to me again?]

When I didn’t reply, he panicked and sent another one right away.

[Fine, fine. I forgive you. I promise we’ll get the license tomorrow.]

He always spoke to me like he was doing me a favor, as if marrying him was some great honor.

I still didn’t answer. I turned off my phone and boarded the plane with Bryce.

Back in his office, Rowan paced and kicked the door in frustration.

Lorinda walked in just then and heard the commotion. She tried to calm him down.

“Rowan, don’t be upset. Lillian’s probably just doing all this to get a reaction out of you.”

She studied his face and kept stirring the pot.

“I saw it coming. She was always sneaking around with your friend. I just didn’t want to hurt you, so I never

said anything.”

But this time, Rowan didn’t take her word for it. He turned on her.

“She said you were lying yesterday. What have you been hiding from me?”

Lorinda forced herself to stay calm, her eyes darting away.

“I never lie. Besides, why would I bother deceiving you?”

Rowan was beginning to believe my words instead. He pressed her.

“If you won’t tell me, I’ll find out myself.”

With his resources, he could dig up the truth easily enough.

Lorinda saw she couldn’t bluff her way out, so she gave him a watereddown version.

“It was just a job thing. I wasn’t really unemployed. I was just messing with her. I didn’t expect you to actually

have her offer rescinded and give the position to me. I was afraid you’d be mad, so I never told you.”

Rowan’s face went pale. He knew how hard I’d worked for that position.

I’d stayed up every night for weeks, anxious and unable to sleep.

He’d seen it all.

And what had he done? He’d believed Lorinda and forced me to give my job to her.

He swayed and grabbed the desk for support.

His eyes burned with regret and rage at being played.

“Why would you do that? Do you have any idea how much that job meant to Lillian?”

Lorinda shrugged it off like it was nothing.

“It’s just a job. Lose one, just find another.”

Rowan shouted, his eyes redrimmed.

“No. You don’t get it. You don’t know how long she prepared for that.”

Lorinda still didn’t grasp the gravity of it. She looped her arm around his and cooed, “Oh, come on, it’s all in

the past. I said I’m sorry, okay?”

Rowan pointed at the door.

“Get out.
