They Shaved My Head on My Wedding Night, and My Donna Mother-in-Law Went on a Rampage Chapter 02

I barely recognized the woman in the mirror.

My hair had been buzzed almost to the skin, with uneven patches exposing the red, irritated scalp underneath.

Fine scratches covered the skin behind my ears and along the back of my neck. Someone had smeared a greasy, chemical-smelling cream over the area, leaving my scalp throbbing and stinging.

Ginevra sat on the sofa holding a pair of pink electric clippers. When I emerged from the bathroom, she waved them at me.

“Oh, you’re awake.”

I screamed.

“What did you do to me?”

“Gave you a new look.”

She shrugged.

“Brides want something unique these days. The second you walk in tomorrow, no one will ever forget you.”

Two bridesmaids beside her covered their mouths and laughed. They weren’t my friends.

A Vitale wedding came with security risks, and Ginevra, whom the family treated as one of their own, had volunteered to handle my security. She’d replaced my entire bridal party with women loyal to her.

One of them, a woman I vaguely remembered as Beatrice, pointed her phone at me.

“This is incredible. A bald bride. So avant-garde.”

I instinctively raised a hand to cover my face.

Beatrice laughed even harder.

“Why are you hiding your face? It’s not like you can hide your head.”

The room erupted in laughter.

My ears rang as I stood there, unable to move. I wanted to curse at them, rip the phone from Beatrice’s hand, and smash the clippers to pieces.

But my throat locked up, and I couldn’t force out a complete sentence.

I’d always been like that. The angrier I became, the harder it was to speak.

The problem was, I was freakishly strong, so things could get ugly when I finally lost my temper.

Ginevra didn’t know that. She saw me as a harmless little kitten she could push around.

She came over and reached for my head.

“Come on, let me touch it. I bet it feels just like my Sphynx.”

I jerked backward and slammed my lower back against the vanity. Pain shot through my scalp, and tears spilled down my face.

Ginevra returned to the sofa and called Matteo, putting him on speaker.

“Matteo, you need to come up here. Alessia seems a little upset.”

Matteo sounded tired on the other end.

“What happened?”

Ginevra sighed.

“I was just playing around and gave her a new look. Then she started crying out of nowhere. She’s kind of scaring me.”

I went for the phone, but Ginevra hid it behind her back and deliberately raised her voice.

“Don’t get worked up. I already told you I didn’t mean it. Why are you so angry? You’re not going to hit me, are you?”

My entire body trembled.

“You did it on purpose.”

Afraid I might attack Ginevra and things would spiral out of control, Matteo rushed upstairs.

The moment he entered and saw me, his brows drew together, shock flashing in his eyes.

I thought he would be furious. At the very least, I expected him to ask whether I was hurt.

But Ginevra rushed to him first and grabbed his sleeve.

“Matteo, I swear I didn’t mean to do it. I only wanted to make the wedding more memorable. Please don’t yell at me. You know that scares me.”

Matteo looked down at her.

My heart sank because he didn’t pull away.

He merely sighed, sounding more weary than angry.

“Why do you always have to take things this far?”

The day Matteo and I signed our marriage papers, Ginevra had posted an Instagram Story that read:

[Some bitch stole my Matteo.]

He’d dismissed that as another joke.

Now she’d shaved my head while I was asleep on the night before our wedding ceremony, and to him, it was still just Ginevra taking a joke too far.

He kept indulging her, even when it meant letting her humiliate me.
