They Said I Spent 80,000, I Had 800 Chapter 05

Twenty minutes later, Kaysen fell to his knees the second he walked through the door.

“Mom, Dad, I’m sorry! I know I was wrong,” he began frantically. “I was just worried Oaklee would blow through the money, so I figured I’d hold onto it for her. I swear I never took a cent for myself.”

Mom stared at him, saying nothing.

Dad handed over the account statements his secretary had printed out.

“Explain this.”

Page after page of records lay scattered in front of him.

Kaysen glanced down, his face draining of all color.

He began to stammer excuses. “That… those were investments! I used the money for investments, but I lost it. I’ll make it up, I promise! I’ll use my own money!”

Dad let out a cold laugh. “Investments? Club bills, Hermès, a down payment on a Porsche–that’s what you call investments?”

Kaysen’s lips trembled, but no sound came out.

Mom sat there, no longer jumping to defend him.

Realizing that playing the victim was no longer working, Kaysen dropped the act entirely.

“Oaklee didn’t grow up with us! She comes back and spends all her time calculating how to steal what’s mine. So what if I took some money?”

“She’s trying to drive a wedge between us–she wants me out of this family!”

“Kaysen,” I said, setting my phone on the coffee table. “Look at this.”

It was an audio recording.

Three months ago, the first time I went to his apartment to borrow money, I recorded every single

word he said.

His voice echoed from the speaker, saying, “That’s all from Mom and Dad. There’s no more.”

Then the recording of the time he forced me to sign an IOU, saying, “Don’t expect a penny if you

don’t sign it.”

Next came the hospital bills, my pay stubs from my part–time jobs, and the bank records of the eight hundred dollars he transferred to me each month. Along with the IOUS he had made me write

by hand.

Finally, screenshots of his transfers to “Nikki,” detailing every single transaction.

this enough?” I asked quietly.

Dad’s face turned livid.

Mom stood up, picking up each piece of evidence one by one to read.

Kaysen went completely silent.

Right then, his phone rang.

Everyone saw the caller ID: [Nikki]

Kaysen tried to decline the call, but Mom snatched the phone first and hit speakerphone.

That same sweet voice came through the speaker. “Babe, did you get the money? I made a

reservation for tonight.”

Mom said nothing.

Nikki seemed to sense something was wrong, paused, and hung up.

Mom began scrolling up through their text history.

Message after message, transfer records, photos, and everything Kaysen had said to her.

She stopped at a recent transfer.

This afternoon. A hundred thousand.

Note: [Buy whatever you want, baby.]

He had sent it while we were cross–referencing the accounts.

Mom set the phone back on the table and looked up at him.

Kaysen was pale as a sheet. “Mom, let me explain!”

Mom’s hands shook violently. “And you still have the nerve to claim you were saving that money for Oaklee?”
