They Regretted It After I Gave Up Chapter 10

Beckett was taken to the police station.

The lights in the interrogation room were stark white, just like in the operating room.

He sat in a chair with his hands cuffed to the table, his head bowed.

The detective across from him opened a notebook.

“Start from the beginning.”

Beckett was silent for a long time before he finally spoke.

“Katerina and I grew up together. We were neighbors, went to the same schools since preschool.”

“She was always smarter than me. Always number one. I’m a year older, and my grades were good, but I could never beat her.”

“After Tessa Wells transferred to our school, I fell for her.”

“She was beautiful, outgoing. She was set on Harvard, set on the Larkin Scholarship.”

“But our school only had one nomination.”

“And that was always going to be Katerina. Kat’s profile was just always a little stronger than Tessa’s.”

“Tessa was a wreck about it. She told me that as long as Kat applied, she didn’t stand a chance.”

“I didn’t want to let her down, so I came up with a plan.”

“My father knows a doctor who owes our family a favor. I asked him to help me fake a diagnosis, to say Kat had chronic fatigue syndrome.”

“I thought it was simple. Just make her miss this year’s application cycle. After Tessa got in, I’d tell Kat the truth, stay with her for a year while she recovered, and help her apply again.”

“I thought, it’s only one year. She can make it up.”

He stopped, his voice starting to shake.

“That bottle of antifreeze… I took it from my dad’s garage. I thought, you know, if Kat found out, if she tried to make a scene…”

He didn’t finish the sentence.
