They Loved Their White Moonlight, Till I Disappeared Forever Chapter 10

I wasn’t allowed at the party. Zane took me back to my

apartment.

For some reason, his attitude seemed to have softened.

“Don’t threaten us with your death again. Even if Merritt

doesn’t want you, your life here is still better than most. As

long as you leave Seraphina alone, I’ll even look out for you.”

I looked up at the moon and said quietly, “I want to go home.”

Zane’s tone softened further.

“Back to your brother’s? I can talk to Merritt again. Seraphing

will be living in Manhattan now, so it makes sense for you to

go back to Brooklyn.”

I reached out, grabbing his sleeve, and looked up at him.

“I want to go to your home, Zane. Go tell him. My wound

hurts. I can’t move. I’ll wait for you here.”

I had probably never spoken to him so softly.

In Zane’s eyes, I had always been the one who saved him, the

one who could handle anything.

Now, as I looked up at him, he seemed completely thrown.

Once, he had considered me his only family. He had even

decorated his apartment according to my tastes.

“Okay.”

His answer was swift. “I’ll have my assistant stay with you. I’ll be right back.”

Watching Zane stride away, I smiled faintly.

By the time Zane returned with Merritt and the others, I had

already dismissed the assistant. I was sitting on the terrace

railing, a heavy marble ornament cradled in my arms.

Below me, even the moon’s reflection in the swimming pool

was perfectly whole.

In this world, I had always been the one who didn’t belong.

“I’m going back to my real home. Someone is waiting for me

there.”

I swung both legs over the railing.

Their faces changed. They rushed toward me.

I didn’t hesitate. Clutching the marble, I tipped backward

over the edge.
