Seraphina’s face fell, but Merritt didn’t have time to comfort

her.

“Helena caused all this trouble because of me. It’s only fitting

she stays here. As long as she behaves. Seraphina will be the

mistress of this house soon. She’s always been kindhearted; she won’t hold a grudge.”

At that, Seraphina’s expression was a mask of barely

suppressed grievance.

Seeing her distress, Matteo offered, “Then let her come back

to Brooklyn with me?”

But Merritt was firm.

“You can’t watch her. She said she was over Brennan, and

she hasn’t contacted you, her own brother, in four years. With

me, at least, she’s relatively docile. The moment we let her

out, she’ll just cause more trouble. I think she should stay

here, with Zane watching her. It’s what’s best for Seraphina.”

The moment he framed it as being for Seraphina’s sake, Brennan and the others stopped objecting.

The gloom on Seraphina’s face lifted. Everyone else seemed

to breathe a sigh of relief.

Lights flickered on outside the window as the moon rose high in the sky.

The party, briefly paused by Seraphina’s “disappearance,”

now resumed. Everyone was eating the pumpkin pie she had

made, smiles all around.

They thought they had me all figured out. They thought they had finally protected the one person they truly cared about.
