They Erased Me, So I Rewrote My Life Chapter 51

In the spring of our junior year, Leo’s uncle announced he was going to Iowa for the annual farm machinery expo.

When I heard it, my heart sank.

In my last life, that was where he had died suddenly of a heart attack.

“You can’t go.” I grabbed his hand, my voice tight. “Please. I have a terrible feeling about this.”

He and Leo exchanged a look.

The kind of look adults give a child who is worrying too much.

Gentle and a little helpless.

“Eliza, kid.” He patted my hand. “This is something I love. I can’t stop living just because I’m afraid.”

“But—”

“He’ll be careful.” Leo took over, placing a hand on my shoulder before looking at his uncle. “But this time, you have to get a full physical first. And you’re bringing an emergency kit.”

In the end, Uncle Manuel still went.

But at our insistence, he had a complete checkup and took a portable defibrillator with him.

A week later, he returned safely, carrying a slightly ridiculous-looking trophy.

That night, Leo and I sat on the back steps of the farmhouse.

“We did it,” he said softly, as if confirming it to himself. “We really changed something.”

“Yes.”

“Eliza?”

“Mm?”

“We changed so much. Do you think there will be a price?”

I thought for a moment, looking at his profile in the moonlight.

“Maybe,” I said. “But I’d rather face an outcome I’ve never seen than walk down a road where I already know the ending.”

He smiled and drew me into his arms.

“Me too.”
