It was Mason Whitfield.

Without a word, he punched the landlord in the face, grabbed my hand, and pulled me outside, not stopping until we were on a busy street.

He immediately bent down to check me over. “Are you hurt? Are you okay?”

I looked at him and tried to joke. “Mason, if you’d been a few minutes later, I might have been done for.”

He quickly shook his head. “Don’t say that. You’re fine.”

His face darkened as he thought about what happened. “That place is too remote, it’s dangerous for you alone. The GPS you sent me was hard to find.”

“There are rentals near my place, so don’t look anymore, come with me.”

I smiled and teased him. “Okay. Half rent?”

“You owe me your life, and you want half rent. Emma Hartwell, you’re something else.”

Mason looked at me, helpless but tender.

We went way back.

The day I was kidnapped and tied up in that shack, Mason happened to be passing by when he heard me scream.

He grabbed a crowbar, broke the lock, kicked the thugs aside, and saved me.

I was barely conscious, mumbling about needing to take my SSEE.

He didn’t hesitate, he drove me straight to the exam hall, pulling up just before the final entry bell.

Because of him, I was able to focus and become state champion.

After the SSEE, I decided to study abroad. He just laughed and said, “How did you know I was just here visiting?”

We traveled together for a while, and during that time, he confessed.

He said he knew who I was the moment he saw me.

Our connection went back to childhood.

He had been cornered by bullies until I shouted and scared them off, helping him escape.

I looked at him, his eyes so gentle, and couldn’t help but smile. “So you’re paying me back by giving me yourself?”

Mason didn’t answer directly. His ears turned a little red, but his voice was serious.

“I don’t know about the future. But right now, I just want to be by your side.”

I never expected to see Caleb again so soon.

Six months later, on campus abroad, I walked out the gate and ran right into a familiar, yet strange, figure.

He looked different, the arrogance was gone. He was worn out, his face exhausted.

His eyes were bloodshot, and he was thinner, nothing like the cocky guy from before.

The moment his eyes met mine, his pupils dilated. He charged at me and grabbed my wrist hard.

He was crushing me.

I yanked my hand away with all my strength, and red marks were already forming.

“Emma… Emma Hartwell!”

He called my name, his voice rough.

I didn’t stop. I looked away, my voice cold. “Sorry, you have the wrong person.”

Seeing me leave, he panicked and followed, staying right behind me like a lost child, his voice dripping with pathetic apologies.

“Emma, I know I messed up. I was blind and stupid. I wasted two lifetimes of your love.”

“I know everything now, you saved me back then. I know your feelings, all of it.”

“Fate gave me this second life to make things right. Emma, please, just give me one more chance.”
