They Called Me The Mistress, Until My Mafia Family Arrived Chapter 09

They Called Me The Mistress, Until My Mafia Family Arrived Chapter 09

On the day he was discharged, Rhett sent a fleet of cars to pick us up.

Instead of returning to the Sinclair family headquarters, we went back to our own little house.

This was the wedding home that our family gave us when we got married.

As soon as I walked in, I collapsed onto the couch and let out a long sigh.

“There’s no place like home.”

Evan walked over to me and sat down next to me.

He didn’t say a word; he just looked at me quietly.

I turned my head and met his gaze.

“What’s wrong?”

He suddenly reached out and pulled me into his arms.

“Mia.”

“Hmm?”

“I… signed up.”

I was completely confused.

“Signed up? Signed up for what?”

Evan pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket and handed it to me.

I opened it and saw that it was a registration form for a business management course.

And it was a fully closed-off boot camp.

I looked at him.

“Are you going to take classes?”

What he used to hate most were unfamiliar surroundings and crowds.

Attending this kind of fully enclosed boot camp was pure torture for him.

“Evan, you don’t have to push yourself.”

I spoke hurriedly.

“Our family is wealthy; our older brothers and sisters will take care of us for the rest of our lives.”

“Isn’t it nice to be a happy pair of good-for-nothings?”

Evan shook his head firmly.

“No.”

He looked at me and spoke slowly, enunciating every word.

“I want to… support you myself.”

“I won’t let others… look down on you.”

At that moment, as I looked into his clear, determined eyes, I suddenly realized that my boy had grown up.

He was no longer the person who used to hide away in his own world.

For my sake, he was willing to step out of his comfort zone and face the world.

I held him tight, and tears streamed down my face.

“Okay.”

“I’ll wait for you.”

One year later.

New York, Lancaster Group Headquarters.

I was sitting on my second older brother’s couch, scrolling through my phone.

“Come on, Mia Lancaster, can’t you pull yourself together?”

Ethan finished the paperwork he was working on and walked over to me with a cup of coffee.

“Evan’s been interning at the company for six months now, and you’re still freeloading off me.”

I rolled my eyes with complete confidence.

“My husband works to support the family, and I’m in charge of looking gorgeous—is there a problem with that?”

Ethan was so annoyed he burst out laughing.

“All right, you win.”

Over the past year, Evan had undergone a remarkable transformation.

He graduated at the top of his class from that fully residential business management boot camp.

Although he still didn’t say much and didn’t like socializing,

His aptitude for data and business acumen was truly outstanding.

The Sinclair family entrusted him directly with the management of their venture capital firm.

In just six months, all the projects he invested in turned a huge profit.

Those who once mocked him as a fool in New York now addressed him respectfully as “Boss” whenever they saw him.

Ding…

My phone buzzed.

It was a text message from Evan.

“Off work. Coming to pick you up.”

I jumped right up from the couch, grabbed my bag, and headed out.

“Ethan, my husband’s here to pick me up. Bye!”

Ethan shook his head in exasperation from behind.

I took the executive elevator down to the underground parking garage.

I spotted that familiar Maybach right away.

Evan was wearing a suit and leaning against the car door, waiting for me.

His demeanor had become much more composed; though he still carried a hint of aloofness, it was no longer the kind of inclusiveness that kept people at arm’s length.

When he saw me, a smile lit up his eyes.

“Mia.”

He walked over, naturally took the bag from my hands, and opened the car door for me.

“Tired today?”

I slid into the passenger seat and smiled at him.

“Not tired. Ethan’s couch is really soft.”

Evan got into the car and leaned over to fasten my seatbelt.

He was very close to me; I could smell the faint, woody scent of his cologne.

“What do you feel like eating tonight?” he asked.

“Hmm… I’d love to have some of Rhett’s baby back ribs.”

“Okay, let’s go home.”

The car pulled smoothly out of the garage and merged into New York traffic.

As I watched the street scene rush by outside the window, my thoughts drifted back to Havenport.

That dinner had changed us completely.

Jewel completely lost her mind in the mental hospital.

Ryan was sentenced to fifteen years, and because he had made enemies while inside, his life there was a living hell.

And Evan and I were still the envy of everyone in New York.

But now I was the only good-for-nothing left.

“What are you thinking about?”

Evan’s voice interrupted my train of thought.

He stopped the car at the traffic light and turned to look at me.

“Nothing.”

I took his hand, which was resting on the steering wheel.

“I was just thinking, now that my husband is so successful, will I be able to walk all over New York in the future?”

Evan took my hand in his, our fingers intertwined.

“Sure.”

He looked me in the eye, his tone serious.

“You can go wherever you want.”

“I’ll protect you.”

“All right, it’s a deal.”
