They Called Me The Mistress, Until My Mafia Family Arrived Chapter 08

New York, Lancaster Family Private Hospital.

In the luxury VIP suite on the top floor, the only sound was the steady beep of the medical equipment.

I pushed open the door and tiptoed inside.

Evan was leaning against the hospital bed; his face was still pale, but his breathing had evened out.

He had a new defibrillator implanted in his chest, wrapped in thick bandages.

Hearing the door open, he turned his head.

Those eyes, which had once been vacant, lit up with a glimmer the moment they saw me.

“Mia.”

His voice was soft and a little hoarse.

Fighting back tears, I hurried over to the bed and clasped the hand he held out to me.

“I’m here.”

I buried my face in the palm of his hand, feeling the warmth there.

“I’m sorry, Evan. It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have taken you to that dinner party…”

If I hadn’t been so restless and wanted to join in the fun, you wouldn’t have had to go through such a horrible ordeal.

Evan took my hand in his, rubbing the corner of my eye with his fingertips.

“It’s not your fault.”

He spoke very slowly, emphasizing every word.

“Mia… protects me.”

“I’ll… protect Mia, too.”

Finally, I couldn’t hold back my tears any longer.

What an idiot.

He couldn’t even protect himself, yet when danger struck, he stepped in front of me without a moment’s hesitation.

Stella pushed the door open and, seeing us like that, sighed helplessly.

“All right, stop being so clingy.”

“The test results are in. You’re adapting well to the new device, and you’ll be able to be discharged in about two weeks.”

She walked over to the bed and checked Evan’s vital signs.

“That kid’s lucky to be alive.”

“If we’d been a minute later, even Jesus couldn’t have saved him.”

Still shaken, I clutched Evan’s hand tightly.

“Stella, I don’t know how to thank you.”

Stella rolled her eyes.

“Don’t give me that.”

“Your brothers are out there, and they’re really fuming.”

No sooner had she finished speaking than the door to the ward swung open.

My brothers Rhett and Ethan walked in.

Rhett still looked cold and aloof, but his gaze softened considerably when it met mine.

Ethan, on the other hand, looked at Evan with a look of disgust.

“Ugh, what a loser.”

“Just trying to score a free meal, and you ended up in the ICU.”

Ethan might not have said the nicest things, but he was holding my favorite juice.

“When the head of the Sinclair family heard that something had happened to his precious grandson, he nearly blew up Havenport.”

“If Clara hadn’t stopped them, they probably would have gone to Havenport to tear Jewel to pieces with their own hands.”

Evan’s two older sisters were also known throughout New York for being fiercely protective of him.

The reason we arranged this marriage in the first place was that the four of them figured it would be easier to just put the two good-for-nothings together and raise them.

But now it seemed that far from being a shortcut, they were actually creating a vulnerability for themselves.

“All right, as long as he’s okay.”

Rhett spoke in a low voice.

“The matter involving the Kensington family has been taken care of.”

“From now on, no one in Havenport will dare to mention those two words again.”

He looked at me, his tone softening slightly.

“If something like this happens again, call me right away.”

“Don’t try to handle it all on your own.”

I nodded obediently.

“Okay, big brother.”

The guys didn’t stick around long; once they made sure Evan was okay, they gave us some space to be alone.

Silence fell over the ward once again.

Evan kept staring at me, his gaze intense.

“What’s wrong?” I touched my face. “Is there something on my face?”

He shook his head, then suddenly reached out and pulled me into his arms.

His movements were gentle, yet they carried an unyielding determination.

Mia.

His chin rested on my shoulder, and his breath was warm.

“I don’t want to… be a loser anymore.”

I was stunned.

Due to his trauma, Evan had always kept to himself; he lived in his own world and never cared what others thought.

This was the first time he had expressed a desire to change.

I gently pushed him away a little and looked into his eyes.

“Why do you say that?”

Evan lowered his eyes slightly, his eyelashes casting a shadow across his pale face.

“They… are picking on you.”

He was referring to Jewel and Ryan.

“I… can’t protect you.”

His voice betrayed a sense of self-reproach and frustration.

Although he blocked that slap for me, he was powerless to stop the damage that followed.

He couldn’t even save his own life, let alone protect me.

A pang of sadness washed over me, and I cupped his face in my hands.

“Evan, you’ve done a great job.”

“You took the slap for me. You didn’t abandon me.”

“To me, you’re the bravest person in the world.”

Evan shook his head stubbornly.

“That’s not enough.”

He looked up, his eyes sparkling with a light I had never seen before.

“I want to… get stronger.”

“Just like your brothers.”

“Protect Mia.”

His serious expression made me laugh, but I couldn’t help the tears from welling up.

“Okay, let’s make Evan stronger.”

“But right now, your most important task is to focus on getting better.”

For the next two weeks, Evan received treatment at the hospital.

Stella personally monitored his vital signs every day.

Other members of the Sinclair family took turns visiting every day, bringing mountains of supplements with them each time—they nearly filled the hospital room to the brim.

“Mia, you’ve really gone out of your way for us.”

Clara held my hand, looking grateful.

“If it weren’t for you, Evan might have…”

“Don’t say things like that,” I interrupted her. “Evan is my husband; we’re family.”

Stella stood nearby, wiping away her tears.

“If anyone ever dares to bully you again, I’ll be the first to stand up to them!”

Two weeks later, Evan was finally discharged from the hospital.
