When Madeline Vance saw me take out my phone, she reached out and snatched it with a slap.

There was a loud “smack.”

My phone went flying.

Madeline Vance stood with a cold face, sneering, “School rules forbid bringing phones, didn’t you know?”

I knelt down, picked up the black-screened phone, and pursed my lips.

“You pay for my phone.”

Madeline Vance let out a cold laugh, standing in front of me with her arms crossed.

“If it broke, you brought it on yourself.”

“Do you think rules are set for others but don’t count for you?”

I said in a small voice: “I just wanted to call my brother.”

“My stomach hurts, I want to go home.”

The students at the edge of the field gathered around, whispering.

“Isn’t Ms. Vance going too far? Even the phone is broken.”

“Shh, keep it down, she just said Jewel St. Claire was faking it.”

“But Jewel St. Claire’s complexion is really bad, her lips are white.”

Madeline Vance heard the chatter, and her gaze became even more sinister.

Suddenly, she noticed my wrist as I was picking up the phone.

She saw the diamond bracelet on my hand, with a gold pendant in the middle.

Madeline Vance grabbed my wrist, lifting my hand into the air, and said contemptuously.

“Jewel St. Claire, not only did you bring a phone to school, but you’re also wearing this kind of thing on your hand?”

“A high school student, who are you wearing this fake diamond bracelet for?”

“Applying lip balm in class and wearing shiny things on your wrist—how dare you say you’re not doing it to seduce men?”

I struggled hard, my hand hurting from her grip.

“It’s not fake! This was a birthday gift from my oldest brother!”

Madeline Vance said with disdain: “From your brother?”

“Probably glass beads bought from a roadside stall. You’ll tell any lie just to save face.”

She pulled hard, trying to yank the bracelet off.

“Confiscated. Have your brother come to school to pick it up; I want to see what kind of family you come from!”

I grew frantic and tried desperately to pull back.

“Let go! You’re not allowed to touch it!”

This was a birthday gift from Alistair. There was only one in the world.

I was like a maddened little animal, desperately scratching at her fingers.

“Let go! Madeline Vance, you old woman! Let go!”

Madeline Vance was enraged by my resistance and pulled back even harder.

“You dare to get physical with me?”

Amidst the struggle, there was a crisp “snap.”

The bracelet broke.

Pink diamond beads scattered all over the ground. The gold pendant engraved with my name rolled away and into the sewer grate.

I knelt on the ground, picking up the broken shiny pieces one by one.

My hands were shaking uncontrollably.

Tears finally flowed out, beyond my control.

I didn’t cry when she forced me to run, but why did she have to break the gift Alistair gave me!

Madeline Vance brushed her hands together as if she had touched something filthy.

“Oh, well, it’s broken. Who are you crying for over some fake junk?”

“It’s just roadside trash anyway, consider it a lesson learned.”

I clutched the broken pieces of the chain tightly in my palm.

I slowly stood up and looked at her bitter, sharp face.

Suddenly, I turned and ran, climbing all the way to the top floor of the teaching building in one breath.

The whole school was in an uproar, and the field was packed with people.

“Look! The roof!”

“Isn’t that Jewel St. Claire? What is she doing!”

I cried loudly, shouting down toward the bottom in grievance.

“Ms. Vance, why do you only like boys?”

“Why do you always think girls are seducing men? Why did you have to break the things my brother gave me?”

“Then this baby might as well just stop living!”

I stood on the edge of the rooftop, tears blurring my vision.

I cried out my complaint: “Ms. Vance smiles every time she sees a boy, but she picks on us girls!”

“My stomach hurt today and she wouldn’t let me take a leave; she said girls have to serve men later!”

“She even tore the bracelet my brother gave me… waaaaah…”

Below the teaching building, things had already turned into a chaotic mess.

The headmaster was holding a megaphone, shouting until his voice was hoarse.

“Student, please come down! Whatever it is, let’s talk!”

“Don’t be impulsive!”

Other teachers and students were also pacing frantically.

Only Madeline Vance stood with her arms crossed, a disdainful sneer on her lips.

“Jewel St. Claire, what kind of pity are you acting for? It’s just a fake bracelet, is it worth all this drama?”

I was trembling with rage, and my tears fell even harder.

Just then, a massive roar came from overhead.

Everyone instinctively looked up.

A black helicopter circled above the teaching building, the powerful air currents making it hard for people to keep their eyes open.

The helicopter landed on the field.

A man stepped out wearing a perfectly tailored haute couture suit, his posture upright and his expression cold.

The moment he landed, he began striding toward the rooftop.

It was Alistair!
