I didn’t think much of it; since she told me to get out, I might as well go home.

Once home, I used the fingerprint lock to open the door, and the entryway was lit with a warm glow.

I shouted, “I’m back!”

Alistair, the CEO brother, walked out wearing an apron, still holding a spatula.

His shirt sleeves were rolled up, revealing firm forearms. He turned to look at me: “Why so early today? What time is it for you to be home?”

I tossed my backpack onto the sofa and lay back comfortably:

“Nothing much, I just came back early today.”

Alistair’s head tilted slightly: “School let out early? The dean’s office didn’t send a notice.”

I sipped some milk and responded vaguely, “Anyway, the teacher told me to leave, so I came back.”

I was scrolling through my phone and showed him a cute cat emoji I found.

Julian took a look and said helplessly, “Jewel, that’s a leopard.”

After eating, I lay on the sofa scrolling through my phone.

At that moment, the family iMessage thread started blowing up.

Several brothers were arguing about where to go for the weekend—a tropical island or skiing.

Everett, the eighth brother who is in college, chimed in after hearing this: [Sister already promised to go to the bookstore with me…]

Then the other brothers started tagging him like crazy.

I held my milk and giggled, sending a voice message to the group.
