“If you really want to follow Chase, why don’t you go join him inside? He must be lonely in there.” 

The room went dead silent. 

“All of Chase’s illegal earnings are forfeit. Plus fines.” 

“Vance Industries won’t be what it was. If you stay, I’ll take 

care of you. If you want to leave, I’m not stopping you.” 

One person snorted and walked out with their stuff. 

But others stayed. 

To keep cash flow alive, I sold most of the properties. 

Including Oakhaven Estate. 

That place, he said it wasn’t my home. I didn’t want it. No 

point keeping it. 

When I went back to pack my things, Randy was waiting at 

the gate. “You ungrateful bitch! Having a good time while 

your old man’s been waiting here for days!” 

He rushed at me. 

The guard behind me grabbed his arm. 

“Let go! You know who I am? I’m her father! You think you 

can touch me?” 

“Harper, you get rich and forget about your own blood?” 

I nodded at the guard. 

One second later, the guard kicked the back of Randy’s knee 

and forced him to kneel. 

I looked down at him. “Randy. You forgot already? You 

ditched me ten years ago. And if I’m remembering right, your 

also walked off with one of my debit cards. Fifty grand, 

yeah? So what, you here to pay me back today?” 

His face crumpled in pain. The second he heard “pay back,” 

he scrambled. “Right, right, I remembered wrong. We’re not 

related! And you’re not getting that money back!” 

He staggered up, took one look at the tall guard, and limped 

off, shooting me a dirty look. 

“Ms. Quinn, you’re just letting him go?” the guard asked.

The car drove to Pine Grove Cemetery at the edge of town.

My jaw tightened. I had people come in and fix it up. 

In the middle of the cemetery, my mother’s grave sat next to 

my two children’s. 

Finally, I breathed. “You’re okay.” 

I touched the headstones. Tears slid down my face. 

“Mom. I don’t have a home again.” 

“I’m alone now. But I don’t regret it.” 

“I’m not putting my hope in anyone else anymore. From now 

on, I belong to myself.” 

“You and the kids down there, don’t worry about me. I’ll be 

fine.” 

A spring breeze lifted my hair. Like a mother’s soft touch. 

Vance Industries was renamed Quinn Holdings. 

I never heard about Brittany again. 

She couldn’t make it in Oakhaven. No job. Changed her name 

and moved somewhere far away. 

Raising a kid alone. I doubt life was kind to her. 

Chase? Who knows how many years before he gets out. 

By then, I’ll have everything locked down. He won’t be able 

to fight me even if he tries. 

We grew up together. Knew each other when we were young. Ten years of marriage, gone like smoke. 

Love died in the spring. What grew from it was my new life.
