The Wedding Is Off, and So Am I Chapter 06

That was how I knew he truly loved her. 

I laughed through my tears and finally whispered three words, “I’m sorry.” 

Lucas let go and had me sign a document. 

It was ridiculous that he thought just because I signed the paper, I’d actually have a baby for Celeste. 

But I signed it anyway, just so I could leave. 

Lucas helped me up, his eyes conflicted: “Just to be safe, you’ll 

have to put up with a little discomfort.” 

“And don’t tell anyone about Celeste losing the baby.” 

When I was locked inside the hospital storage closet, I 

understood what he meant by “put up with a little 

discomfort.” 

And he wheeled Celeste off to their wedding. 

I pounded on the door and screamed until a cleaning lady 

heard me and let me out. 

I checked the time. My flight was about to take off. 

I hurried to the airport. 

As I was boarding, his mother called me. 

“Vera, where are you? Lucas said you ran away from the wedding. And he’s going to marry Celeste?” 

Before I could answer, she heard the flight announcement 

over the PA system. 

“Vera, you’re at the airport. Today is your wedding day. Where are you going?” 

“Mrs. Sterling, today’s wedding is between him and Celeste. It has nothing to do with me.” 

She didn’t even hang up before I heard her demanding to know 

if Lucas had bullied me. 

He told her loudly, “Mom, Celeste is pregnant. You’re going to 

have a grandchild soon.” 

I thought she’d be happy to hear that. She’d been desperate for 

a grandchild. 

Instead, she raised her voice and shouted: “Bullshit! She’s been missing a uterus since she was a child. How the hell is she pregnant?” 

I was stunned. 

It was absurd. And laughable. 

But it had nothing to do with me anymore. 

Mrs. Sterling realized the call was still connected and yelled into the phone: “Vera, don’t go! I’ll get justice for you right now. Trying to trick my son like that–she’s just as shameless 

as her mother.” 

The flight attendant told me we were about to take off, so I 

hung up and turned off my phone. 

As I did, I thought I heard Lucas’s voice trembling. “Mom, is 

that true?” 

But I didn’t care about the truth anymore. 

It didn’t matter whether Celeste had been pregnant, or whose baby it had been. 

I closed my eyes and pictured my future. 

For years, I’d given up my own dreams to help Lucas build his. 

Now I had money, and I wasn’t naive enough to revolve my whole life around a man. I had plenty of time to start over. 

When the plane landed, I turned on my phone to a flood of 

missed calls and texts. 

I realized I’d forgotten to block Lucas’s other account. 

I ignored the messages and blocked that one too. 

After clearing out the trash, my mother called. 

“Vera, you finally picked up.” 

“Come back and marry Lucas right now. He knows Celeste tricked him, and he’s drowning in guilt.‘ 

“This is your chance. Come back while his guilt is fresh, and 

lock him down.” 

I smiled and said no. 

My mother was so angry her voice shook. “You stupid girl. You’ve been with him for eight years. Isn’t this what you’ve been waiting for?” 

“With Celeste’s little scam, Lucas will feel so guilty that he’ll treat you like a queen.” 

“If you act all proud and stay away, you’ll hurt his ego. And by 

the time you come to your senses, it’ll be too late.”
