The Wedding Is Off, and So Am I Chapter 05

The Wedding Is Off, and So Am I Chapter 05

The bitterness in my chest pushed me to call some of the company’s shareholders.

When they heard I wanted to sell my thirty percent stake, they all expressed interest.

I told them to make their best offers.

Half an hour later, I signed a share transfer agreement with

the technical director.

He was capable and ambitious, but Lucas had always kept him

at arm’s length.

With my shares, he’d become the company’s largest

shareholder.

I hoped Lucas would like the wedding present I’d prepared for

him.

My phone buzzed again. It was the wedding planner.

The officiant sounded very annoyed: “Miss Montgomery, what do you and your husband mean by this? First you cancel the wedding, then you say go ahead with it. But we already threw away all the decorations because you told us to. How am I supposed to work with this in the middle of the night?”

I felt bad for causing trouble, but it wasn’t my fault.

I apologized to the officiant and made a suggestion: “The wedding between him and me really is canceled. I won’t ask for a refund. If Lucas still wants to go ahead with it, you can

tell him to place a new order.”

“Wouldn’t Mr. Sterling kill me?”

“He’ll pay.”

Because he genuinely wanted to marry Celeste.

I hung up. It was already two in the morning.

I gave up on going home to say goodbye to my mother and

took a cab to a hotel near the airport.

The officiant texted me to say thank you. Lucas was furious, but he did pay again.

I smiled, set an alarm, and fell asleep.

But then my phone started blowing up with calls from Lucas.

I just blocked him, turned off my phone, and went back to

sleep.

Until someone started pounding on my door.

“Vera! Open up!”

When I recognized Lucas’s voice, I remembered I’d forgotten

to turn off the couple location sharing.

His voice was full of rage, and I couldn’t help but think of

Celeste’s deliberate fall.

Had she really lost the baby?

Or was he here because I’d sold my shares?

The next second, Lucas kicked the hotel door open.

He stormed in, his eyes bloodshot, and grabbed me, pulling

me outside.

“Celeste had a miscarriage because of your push, and now she’s lost her uterus forever. How can you just be sleeping?”

I struggled and tried to explain. “I didn’t push her. She fell on

purpose.”

But Lucas shoved me into the car.

“That was her only chance to have a child. Why would she deliberately fall and lose it?”

He locked the doors, sped all the way to the hospital, and

forced me to my knees beside Celeste’s bed.

“Apologize to Celeste. And promise you’ll have a baby for her

to make up for it.”

My knees hit the cold tile floor. The pain and cold spread

through my whole body.

I tried to get up, but Lucas’s hand pressed down on my

shoulder, keeping me there.

“Are you mute? Apologize to Celeste. Now.”

I swallowed my pride and said each word carefully. “I didn’t

push her. If you don’t believe me, go get the security footage from the neighbor’s house.”

The neighbor’s surveillance camera would have captured

Celeste’s performance.

But he didn’t believe me.

“Vera, I’m so disappointed in you. Do you realize that because

of your push, Celeste didn’t just lose the baby–she lost her

uterus?”

“She’s being generous by only asking for an apology. What more could you want?”

“You made it so she can never be a mother. It’s only fair that you give her a baby. And it’s compensation for secretly selling

your shares in my company.”

How fair.

And he, who had always put his career above everything else, had ranked the thirty percent of shares behind Celeste.
