The Unwanted Mrs. Whitmore Chapter 03

The Unwanted Mrs. Whitmore Chapter 03

After going into the kitchen, I took out a pan and some eggs with practiced ease.

I made a simple breakfast of eggs, bacon, and toast, then set it on the table.

After Callum and I finished eating, we got into his car.

As soon as we arrived at the entrance of Whitmore Estate, I saw Vivian there too.

She was carrying a pile of gifts.

When she saw Callum, she immediately hurried over and took his arm.

“Callum, you’re here. I’ve been waiting for you forever. Let’s go see Evelyn together.”

Callum lowered his head and looked at her.

Right in front of me, he laced his fingers with hers.

I didn’t say anything.

I took the gift I had bought for Evelyn from the trunk.

After entering the living room, I noticed Evelyn wasn’t listening to an old opera record the way she usually did.

Instead, she was sitting with her head lowered, lost in thought.

I called softly, “Evelyn.”

Only then did she look at me.

Her eyes were frighteningly red.

Her hands were thin and bony as she held mine.

“Lena.”

“Yeah.”

“I’m sorry.”

Evelyn choked on the words.

I didn’t know what had happened, but I didn’t want to see her so upset.

I was just about to comfort her when Callum and Vivian walked in.

They weren’t being overly intimate.

They simply came in one after the other.

When Vivian saw Evelyn, she warmly placed the gifts on the table and said sweetly, “Evelyn, I’m back in Boston, so I came especially to visit you.”

The Prescotts and the Whitmores had been family friends for years.

Evelyn had watched Vivian grow up too, after all, so there should have been some affection there.

But Evelyn only gave her a cold look.

Finally, she said to me, “Come with me to my room. I have something for you.”

Vivian took half a step back, looking wronged, and carefully tugged on Callum’s sleeve.

I saw it all.

I said nothing and helped Evelyn into her room.

I had thought she called me in this time because she wanted to persuade me to smooth things over with Callum again.

But after we sat down, Evelyn said, “Lena, divorce Callum.”

I froze.

“Evelyn?”

“I know there’s someone else in your life. Callum has never liked you either. You’ve been miserable all these years.”

I thought I had handled my private life carefully enough, and for a moment, I felt embarrassed.

“Evelyn, listen to me. Actually, he and I… nothing has really happened between us yet.”

“I know.”

Evelyn held my hand and interrupted me.

“Lena, I know this isn’t your fault. I thought I knew better than everyone else. I saw that you were kind, grounded, and decent, and I wanted so badly to keep you in the Whitmore family. I was wrong.”

“Back then, I had a fight with Arthur and went to Hollow Creek in West Virginia by myself. When I passed the creek outside town, I saw you cleaning up your grandmother’s grave.”

“At that moment, I thought you were such a kind and decent person.”

“Later, when I fell into the water, you saved me. I had someone look into your background. Your parents treated you like you didn’t matter. They only favored your little brother. But you had always been excellent.”

“I thought maybe you could help my grandson become better too.”

“And he did change. After you came, he stopped spending all day fooling around with that group of friends and started taking some things seriously.”

“I was so happy then. I knew you didn’t want it. I knew he didn’t want it either. But because I thought it would save him, I still forced you to marry him.”

“All of this is my fault.”

“You saved my life, but I used money and the Whitmore family’s status to lock you here.”

I had been close to tears.

But when I heard that last line, I almost laughed again.

“Evelyn, you’ve helped me so much. A little pain didn’t seem like much back then. I was willing.”

“And I didn’t marry Callum only to repay you. Like I told you back then, I really did like him once…”
