The Twin Face That Haunts Me Chapter 11

Thomas left all by himself. Selena lingered in the courtyard for a while before heading upstairs too.

She paused outside my bedroom door as she passed. I was hunched over my phone, typing back to Richard–that flamboyant peacock.

If I humored him, he’d spiral into endless flirting. If I ignored him, he’d ramble on, happily filling the silence all by himself. He was easily the most relentlessly optimistic person alive.

I sighed, and glanced up to find Selena standing rigid in the doorway, her face blank. I nearly jumped out of my skin. “Selena? Is something wrong?”

Selena snapped out of her daze and forced a soft smile. “Nothing at all. Don’t stay up scrolling on your phone too late. Goodnight.”

I nodded. “Alright.”

For days after that, Thomas never set foot in the Carter house again. With the engagement banquet

fast approaching, Mom grew frantic, terrified their wealthy suitor would slip away for good.

Selena waved her off with a dismissive, weary laugh. “Mom, there’s no need to fuss over nothing,

honestly. We’re perfectly fine.”

“He’s swamped with work, and there’s a mountain of engagement logistics he’s sorting out-he

can’t hover around me every single day. Besides, we call each other every night without fail. He told

me the other day that once this busy stretch passes, he’s taking me overseas on a trip.”

Mom still wouldn’t relax. “We’re supposed to go taste the banquet menu tomorrow. Have you told

Thomas yet?”

Selena grabbed her phone. “I completely forgot, actually. I’ll text him right now.”

I sat off to the side, mindlessly scrolling the news, when my Instagram pinged out of nowhere.

Selena had accidentally sent her menu-tasting message straight to our three-person group chat.

Selena: [Tom, are you free tomorrow? We need to go sample the catering for our engagement

party.]

The chat went dead silent. Minutes ticked by, nearly twenty of them, and Thomas hadn’t sent a

single reply. Selena’s face grew visibly paler by the second.

My heart twinged with pity for her, so I typed a message into the group chat to break the awkward

silence.

[What cuisine are we going for? I’ve always wanted to try New England cuisine…]

The phone buzzed almost instantly after I hit send. It was Thomas.

Thomas: [I’ll be there.]
