The System Offered Death As My Only Exit Chapter 06

Adrian’s voice tore through the room.

But my body had already gone limp. He lunged forward to catch me, dropping to his knees as he fumbled to press down on the puncture wounds in my arm. Blood kept seeping out.

The bleeding would not stop. Layer after layer of white gauze was pressed over the wound, only to be soaked

red again.

The doctor looked at the shredded paper on the floor and the monitor blaring beside the bed, despair written

across his face.

“Start resuscitation. Now.”

Adrian grabbed the doctor by the collar, his eyes frighteningly red.

“Save her. She has to come back to me. I want her alive.”

The doctor staggered from his grip, his voice trembling. For the first time, there was no trace of deference in

his tone.

“Mr. Whitmore, I told you long ago that Mrs. Whitmore’s body could not withstand any more stress. You were the one who kept pushing her again and again.”

“She has already stopped breathing. At this point, all we can do is try.”

Adrian roared, “Shut up. I don’t want you to try. I want her alive. She won’t die.”

“She survived so many times before. She’ll survive this too.”

The doctor didn’t dare say another word. He quickly moved in with the others. The defibrillator was pushed over, and bags of blood products were rushed into the room one after another.

A nurse’s hands shook with panic.

“There’s no matching rare blood left in the blood bank. The last supply was already used on Ms. Clarke a few

days ago.”

“And every drop drawn from Ms. Winters was transfused into Ms. Clarke as well. There’s nothing left.”

For a moment, the room fell strangely silent.

Adrian froze completely.

Slowly, he turned to look toward Vivian’s room, then back at the authorization form he had torn apart on

the floor.

The next second, he rushed toward the doctors like a madman.

“Find more. Search the city, the country, overseas. Wherever it is, bring it here.”

“I’ll pay whatever it costs”

The doctor’s eyes glistened with anger. He glared at Adrian, but in the end, he could only lower his head.

“It’s too late, Mr. Whitmore. Mrs. Whitmore’s clotting system has completely failed.”

“The fact that she held on this long was already a miracle.”

Adrian kicked over the treatment cart beside him. Metal instruments crashed across the floor.

“I don’t want to hear that. You’re doctors. How can you not save her?”

‘Evelyn promised she would stay with me for the rest of our lives. How could she die?”

No one answered him.

On the monitor, the line slowly flattened.

Adrian threw himself back to the bedside and pressed both hands against my shoulders. His lips were bleeding where he had bitten them open.

“Evie, wake up.

“I won’t take your blood anymore. I’ll never let anyone touch you again.”

“Audrey’s death was my fault. I know I was wrong. I really know it now.”

om the doorway.

Annie stood there, still clutching the pen.

Her face was pale, and the blood Audrey had left on the hem of her dress had dried into dark stains.

She looked at me, then at Adrian kneeling on the floor.

“Is Mommy still mad?”

Adrian snapped his head around.

Annie was so frightened that she stumbled half a step back.

In the past, whenever she cried, Adrian would pick her up.

But this time, he only stared at the pen in her hand.

She instinctively hid it behind her back, then turned and ran.

A nurse happened to pass by in the hallway. Annie grabbed the corner of her scrubs the way she always did.

“Nurse, can I have some warm milk?”

The nurse stopped and looked down at her. Her expression didn’t change, but the strangeness in her eyes

could not be hidden.

“Annie, your mother just passed away. This isn’t the time for warm milk.”

“Stop making a scene.

Annie froze where she stood.

Then she went to find Adrian again.

“Daddy, what about my dance rehearsal tomorrow?”

“Miss Vivian said she could dance with me.”

Adrian didn’t raise his head.

He held my coat in his arms as if he had not heard a word.

Annie stood there for a long time before finally running out by herself.

At the corner of the hallway, she tripped and fell. Her knee scraped against the floor, and she lay there, sniffling before she instinctively called out, “Mommy…”

The hallway was empty.

Only the lingering smell of blood remained outside the emergency room.

She waited for a long time.

No one came to pick her up.

No one asked if it hurt.

At last, Annie burst into tears.
