The System Offered Death As My Only Exit Chapter 05

After that day, I never cried again.

Once Audrey’s body was taken away, I bent down and picked up the two plane tickets from the floor.

The tickets had been stepped on and torn. I carefully wiped it clean, folded the tickets, and tucked them into the pocket of my hospital gown.

Adrian stood beside me. Several times, he seemed about to speak, but in the end, he only forced out one

sentence.

“Evie, I’ll arrange Audrey’s funeral.”

I didn’t look at him.

My silence seemed to sting him, and his voice dropped.

“Don’t be like this. Vivi was frightened too. She didn’t do it on purpose.’

Only then did I finally raise my eyes to him.

Adrian went still under my gaze.

I asked softly, “She didn’t do it on purpose. What about you?”

His face went pale.

Vivian’s tearful voice came from the end of the hallway again.

“Adrian, my head feels so dizzy.”

Adrian turned almost by instinct.

I looked at his back and smiled faintly.

Good. I didn’t need to test him anymore.

That night, Vivian started acting up again.

She said her heart was racing and that she could not sleep, insisting that Adrian stay with her in her room.

The doctors could find nothing wrong, so she clutched her chest while tears slid down her face.

“Why wasn’t Audrey’s blood enough? Adrian, am I going to die too?”

Adrian rubbed his brow in irritation.

Annie peeked in from the doorway, clutching a document in her hand. Then she trotted over to me and

handed me the paper.

Mommy, can you sign this?”

I looked down.

It was an authorization form for access to a reserved rare-blood unit.

Annie looked up at me and spoke softly.

“Miss Vivian said if you sign it, she won’t feel sick anymore, and Daddy won’t look so upset.”

I looked at her.

There were still bloodstains from Audrey on the hem of her dress.

She didn’t know.

And no one cared.

I asked her, “Annie, do you know why your aunt died?”

She bit her lip.

“Aunt Audrey was already sick. She would have died sooner or later, so it had nothing to do with Miss

Vivian.”

I asked again, “Then what if Mommy dies too?”

Annie froze.

At last, a hint of fear appeared in her eyes, but from Vivian’s room came another low sob.

Annie immediately glanced back and anxiously pushed the pen into my hand.

“Mommy, just sign it first. Miss Vivian really doesn’t feel well

I stopped speaking and quietly took the pen.

r

Adrian had just come out of Vivian’s room. When he saw this, his expression changed sharply.

“Evelyn, what are you signing?”

I didn’t answer.

Beneath the authorization form, cold system text appeared in my vision.

[Do you wish to revoke authorization for life-sustaining intervention?]

I held the pen and signed my name, stroke by stroke.

Adrian rushed over, trying to snatch the paper from my hand.

“Evelyn! Don’t do anything reckless.’

I looked up at him, my voice very soft.

“Adrian, I don’t want any of you taking my blood ever again. I don’t want to be Annie’s mother anymore either. I hate you.”

The monitor suddenly began to scream.

In an instant, Adrian’s face went deathly pale. He held down my hand,`shouting until his voice broke.

“Save her. Resuscitate her now. If she dies, every single one of you will pay for it.”

The doctor looked at the confirmation form, his voice trembling.

“Mr. Whitmore, Mrs. Whitmore was conscious when she signed it. The document is valid. She refuses all

life-sustaining treatment.”

Adrian tore the paper apart.

“It’s not valid. I said it’s not valid.”

The shredded pieces scattered across the floor.

In my mind, the system’s voice had already sounded.

[Host’s vital signs have reached zero. Exit procedure initiated.]

Annie stood in the doorway, still clutching the pen./

With a blank expression, she asked, “Daddy, is Mommy angry again?”

Adrian looked back at her.

That single glance frightened even Annie into taking a step back.

The last thing I saw was Adrian lunging forward to catch me, his hands covered in blood.

His voice broke into a desperate scream.

“Evie, don’t go.”

But I could no longer hear him.
