The Surgeon He Never Knew Chapter 05

The Surgeon He Never Knew Chapter 05

The story detonated across every platform within the hour.

BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS REVEALED AS LEGENDARY DR. PHANTOM. EX-HUSBAND ARRESTED FOR FATAL DRUG

FRAUD AT OWN GALA. THE MOST DEVASTATING TAKEDOWN IN MEDICAL HISTORY.

Clips went viral-Grant’s face when I walked on stage. Vivienne’s scream. My final line. Within twenty-four hours, I was the most talked-about woman in the country.

I watched none of it.

Instead, I sat in the surgical observation room at Mercy, reviewing Margaret Blackwell’s post-op imaging, because work was the only thing that kept my hands from shaking.

Grant was in federal custody-fourteen counts of involuntary manslaughter, fraud, obstruction. Vivienne

detained as a material witness.

My phone buzzed constantly. Media. Interview offers. A call from the actual White House.

I ignored everything except one message.

Damien: You promised the night wasn’t over. I’m holding you to that. My place. 9 PM. I’ll cook.

Dr. Park-my mentor, sixty years old, iron-spined, the only person at Mercy who knew all my secrets-

appeared beside me.

“You’re staring at your phone like a teenager.”

“I’m reviewing imaging.”

“You’re staring at a text from Damien Blackwell.” She sat down. “Go.”

“I just destroyed my ex-husband in front of five hundred people. I’m not in the right headspace-”

“To be human? To accept that someone might care about you?” Her eyes softened. “You’ve spent ten years hiding. You just ripped off the mask. Don’t put it back on.”

“He terrifies me,” I admitted.

“Good. The ones worth having always do.”

Damien’s penthouse occupied the top four floors of a Tribeca building he owned. He opened the door in a dark sweater, sleeves pushed up, kitchen towel over his shoulder. The most feared man in New York, cooking

pasta.

Chapter 5

“You’re staring,” he said.

“You’re cooking.”

“I contain multitudes.”

The penthouse was warm. Lived-in. A child’s drawing hung on the refrigerator-a stick figure with wild dark hair labeled “DADDY” in crooked letters.

“Your daughter?”

“Lily. She’s six. With my mother tonight.” He poured wine for himself, water for me-without asking. He’d noticed I didn’t drink. “She drew that on my birthday. I had a Basquiat in that spot. The Basquiat is in a closet

now.”

We ate. Talked. And slowly, carefully, became real to each other.

“Tell me something true,” he said. “Something you don’t tell anyone.”

“I’m not angry at Grant. I’m angry at myself. For shrinking. For hiding every part of me that made him uncomfortable-my intelligence, my career, my ambition. I made myself invisible so he could feel big.”

“And he still wasn’t satisfied.”

“Because it was never about what I lacked. It was about what he couldn’t handle.”

“Small men suffocate around extraordinary women.” His eyes held mine. “My father was the same. My mother could have run Blackwell Industries better than he ever did. She spent twenty years dimming herself. He thanked her by dying in a Monaco hotel with his mistress.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. She outlived him. Built a children’s hospital in his name just to spite his memory.” A half-smile. “She would have loved you.”

“Damien-I need to be honest. I’m not ready for this. Whatever this is.”

“I’m not asking for anything.” His hand covered mine. “I’m patient.”

“But?”

“But I want you to know-when you are ready-I’ll be here. Not because you’re powerful or brilliant or beautiful, though you’re all three. Because you stood on that stage and chose truth over safety. Because you are the most extraordinary person I have ever met.”

My throat tightened. “That’s a lot of pressure.”

He laughed softly. “Then let’s just eat. The pasta’s getting cold.”

He walked me to the elevator at midnight. Kissed my forehead. Just my forehead.

“Goodnight, Doctor.”

“Goodnight, Damien.”

I rode down forty floors, heart hammering, eyes burning.

For the first time in six years, I felt like myself.
