The Surgeon He Never Knew Chapter 04

The Surgeon He Never Knew Chapter 04

The Langford Medical Gala occupied the grand ballroom of The Pierre-crystal chandeliers, five hundred guests, and my ex-husband’s face on a twenty-foot banner reading GRANT LANGFORD: PIONEERING THE

FUTURE OF MEDICINE.

I stood in the private entrance wearing a black gown that cost more than his car, the Kingsley emeralds at my throat-jewels unseen in public for thirty years.

Damien was beside me. Black suit. Jaw set. Eyes burning with quiet intensity.

“Ready?” he asked.

“I’ve been ready my entire life.”

We entered through the VIP corridor. Backstage, the coordinator handed me a badge: DR. SERA WINTERS –

KEYNOTE SPEAKER.

Grant didn’t know. He’d approved the keynote as “a representative of the Kingsley Group”-his largest investor,

whom he’d never met. He expected a boring corporate introduction.

Through the curtain, I could see him-shaking hands with hospital directors, laughing with FDA officials,

radiating charm that had fooled me for six years.

Vivienne stood beside him in pale pink. Pregnant. Possessive. Scanning the room like a queen.

A kingdom built on my family’s money and fourteen dead patients.

Damien leaned close. “Whatever happens, I’m not leaving your side.

“Go burn it down,” he murmured.

The ballroom held five hundred seats. Standing room only.

Damien took the stage. His presence silenced the room-when the most feared man in New York speaks, people listen.

“Tonight was supposed to celebrate pharmaceutical innovation. But I’ve learned some innovations are built on lies. And some truths have been hidden too long.” He paused. “It is my honor to introduce the sole heir of the Kingsley Group-the silent majority owner of Langford Pharmaceuticals. A woman most of you know by another name. Dr. Phantom.”

The screens lit up.

Dr. Sera Winters. Neurosurgeon. Founder, Mercy Private Surgical Center. Heir, Kingsley Group. Known to the

world as Dr. Phantom.

I walked onto the stage.

Five hundred people stared.

In the front row, Grant’s face turned the color of ash.

“Good evening.” My voice was steel. “Some of you know me as Dr. Phantom. Others know me as the woman

whose husband called her ‘defective’ on a stage very much like this one, two weeks ago. Tonight, I’m here as

both.”

I clicked the remote. Grant’s internal emails filled every screen.

“Eight months ago, Langford Pharmaceuticals launched CardioVeil-a cardiac drug marketed as a breakthrough. What the public doesn’t know: clinical trials showed a twelve percent rate of fatal cardiac

events. The data was falsified. FDA reviewers were bribed. My ex-husband authorized every decision.”

The room erupted.

Grant lurched to his feet. “This is slander! She’s a bitter ex-wife-”

“Fourteen people are dead, Grant.” My voice cut the air like a scalpel. “I have the coroner’s reports. The suppressed trials. The emails where you wrote-‘The lawsuits will cost less than pulling the drug.’ Shall I read

more?”

He went white. Shaking.

I turned to the audience-surgeons, executives, journalists. Every phone raised. Every camera rolling.

“The FDA has been notified. The Department of Justice has received all evidence. And as of this morning, 1-

as majority shareholder-have ordered an immediate recall of CardioVeil and a suspension of all operations.”

I looked at Grant. Then at Vivienne, frozen, hand on her belly.

“You told the world I wasn’t enough. You were right about one thing-I wasn’t enough of a fool to let you kill

people for profit.”

Thunderous applause. Not polite-savage. The sound of an industry watching justice delivered in real time.

Damien was in the wings. His expression-fierce pride, raw admiration-cracked my chest open.

“That,” he said, “was the most magnificent thing I’ve ever seen.”

“The night’s not over.”

“No.” He offered his hand. “It’s just beginning.”

Through the curtain, federal agents entered the ballroom. Grant was surrounded. Vivienne was screaming.

I stood in the wings, holding the hand of a man who looked at me like I was the sun, and felt something I hadn’t felt in years.

Not revenge.

Resurrection.
