The Son I Left Behind Called Me Mommy Chapter 03

The Son I Left Behind Called Me Mommy Chapter 03

The next few days were perfect.

I caught Coop stealing glances at me all the time. Whenever I looked back, he’d whip his head around.

I couldn’t stop smiling.

Eventually, the curiosity got to him. He looked at me again.

I forced a serious face, not wanting to bruise his little ego.

“Why’d you stop smiling?” he asked, sounding confused.

“Huh?” I played dumb.

He pouted, his voice a bit stiff.

“You can smile if you want. I didn’t say you couldn’t.”

He looked away, clearly worried his attitude had made me uncomfortable.

I lost it, laughing as I reached out to pinch his cheeks. “How are you so cute?”

“Shtop it!” he giggled, his words muffled by my grip.

For a second, I let myself believe this could be my life.

That afternoon, we were getting ready for a movie marathon.

I headed downstairs to grab some chips when I heard the front door open.

I thought it was the the butler.

Instead, a tall, familiar silhouette stood in the foyer.

He was leaning over to change his shoes. He looked exactly the same.

Callan froze when he saw me.

He set his briefcase aside and shrugged out of his suit jacket.

“Why aren’t you upstairs with Coop?”

I took it as a hint. He wanted me out.

“I’m leaving now,” I said, finding my voice.

Callan blinked. “?”

Before he could say another word, I grabbed my bag and headed for the door.

He caught my arm. “Wait.”

“Maya.”

It was the first time he’d said my name in years.

Just then, Coop’s voice drifted down from the landing.

“Auntie? Where are you and the chips?”

I knew if I looked at him, I’d never be able to leave. I wrenched my arm free and ran for the door.

I didn’t even look back.

I didn’t hear the frantic thud of small footsteps on the stairs.

Coop ran out onto the porch, barefoot, trying to catch me.

Callan caught him by the waist before he could clear the steps.

“Cooper, where are your shoes?”

Coop didn’t care. “Daddy, stop her! Don’t let her go!”

Callan looked at him, his expression unreadable.

“Cooper, you don’t get to decide if she stays or goes.”

That was the breaking point.

As I reached the gates of the estate, Cooper finally let out a devastated scream.

“Aren’t you my mommy? Why don’t you want me?”

“Bad mommy! I hate you!”

I froze. The world seemed to stop.

He knew. He’d known who I was the whole time.
