The Silent Wolf: From Broken Mother to Shadow Queen Chapter 04

The Silent Wolf: From Broken Mother to Shadow Queen Chapter 04

Comments poured in one after another.

“What’s wrong with that? They can’t grieve forever.”

“They’d better protect this pup once it’s born.”

I suddenly understood what Selka’s “good news” was. She was pregnant too.

But I didn’t feel a thing anymore. All I wanted, and my wolf too, was justice for our pup.

I closed the page and started searching kidnapping cases in our territory, trying to dig up leads on my own.

I buried myself in research, staying up deep into the night.

Then Dorian reached out through the mind-link. He said he had pack business for a few days, told me to take care of myself, and said he’d swing by the training camp to pick up Ellis on his way back.

I laughed coldly and cut the connection.

He had no idea. Half an hour earlier, I’d already gotten a notification about Selka’s latest post.

She’d posted her prenatal results. In the photo, her fingers were laced through Dorian’s.

The caption read:

[Celebrating my twin pregnancy, Dorian’s taking me to Hawaii!]

Dorian had commented: [Hope they’re girls. Beautiful like you.]

I thought about it for a second, found her post, and hit like.

Not long after, the phone rang.

“Hello, is this Christine Mallow? This is the Millhaven enforcement division.”

The word “enforcement” made my heart seize up.

“This is her.”

“We found your pup Ellis’s body. We need you to come to Millhaven for a blood confirmation.”

Hearing that, I couldn’t hold back the tears anymore. My wolf curled up inside me, whimpering in pain.

I thanked them through my tears, then booked the next flight out immediately.

Four hours later, I landed in Millhaven.

The whole way there, Ellis’s sweet little face kept flashing through my mind.

I prayed with everything I had that they’d gotten it wrong.

But when I actually saw his body,

the wolf inside me let out a howl. Hoarse, shattered, like it was tearing my soul apart.

I collapsed beside him, my whole body shaking like it might break apart.

My poor Ellis. Missing a finger, no eyes, only one ear left, his body badly decomposed.

My wolf clawed at me from the inside, desperate to break free, to protect our pup.

But it was too late. Too damn late.

Before he left for camp, he’d happily promised he’d bring me back an apple pie.

And now this was how we were reunited.

I couldn’t imagine what my pup had been through. All I could do was stroke his small body over and over, cursing myself for being useless, again and again.

I don’t know how long passed. My tears ran dry. Only numbness was left.

My wolf went quiet. The kind of quiet that was worse than screaming.

[You’ll make them pay, won’t you?] it said to me, full of hatred.

The enforcer beside me was quietly crying too. But he still did his job, gently helping me to my feet, explaining how the body had been found.

After the Crimson Thorn Pack traitors killed Ellis, they’d dumped his body in a creek.

The body had drifted downstream, where a fisherman found it and reported it.

By then Ellis’s face was swollen and unrecognizable, and even his wolf scent had been washed away by the water.

They’d only confirmed his identity through blood testing and a faint trace of his Alpha bloodline mark.

By the time he finished, I’d bitten my own lip until it bled.

“I swear on the Moon Goddess. We’ll get to the bottom of this and make sure those traitors pay,” the enforcer promised me. Right then, Dorian called. I didn’t pick up.

He called again and again. I ignored it every time.

Then he texted.

[This trip’s legitimate Pack business. Brought Selka because she understands certain territory matters.]

[Even after Selka has her pups, won’t neglect ours. Promise.]

[Take care of the pregnancy this time. Don’t cause trouble.]

Ha. He should be happy. Because I really wasn’t going to “cause trouble” anymore.

Whatever he did from here on, it had nothing to do with me.

I pulled myself together, gave my statement at the enforcement station, and signed the body confirmation papers.

After a night of agonizing over everything, I found a hotel near the airport at dawn to rest for a while.

The second I lay down, Selka texted.

[The moment we landed, Dorian insisted on buying gifts for the little ones. Dropped a few hundred grand just like that. 🧡]

I didn’t bother replying and tossed the phone aside.

But two minutes later, she sent another one.

[Oops, wrong person! Don’t worry, Dorian definitely loves your two pups more.]

It just made me sick. Their little game was so fake. I turned my phone off and went to sleep.

The first thing I did after waking up was contact a pack lawyer to draw up the bond dissolution papers, attaching my termination records.

I had him send everything to Dorian.

Then I changed my number and put all my energy into planning Ellis’s funeral.

In Hawaii, Dorian finally received my package.

The second he opened the documents, fury exploded in him. He shoved away Selka, who’d been walking toward him in pajamas, and grabbed his phone to text me.

[Who gave you the right to get rid of my pup, Christine? This your revenge?]

[I think you’ve completely lost it!]

Realizing he’d been blocked only made him angrier.

He contacted his beta. “Go to the training camp tomorrow and bring Ellis home.”

His chest heaved. He couldn’t believe I was actually going through with breaking the bond, especially over Ellis.

But his beta answered carefully.

“Alpha, training camp ended yesterday. I wasn’t able to pick up Ellis.”

“The instructor told me… Ellis is really dead.”
