As the birthday party got underway, I stayed glued to Elspeth’s side until she finally got tired of me following

her around.

“Why aren’t you hanging all over Leith anymore?”

“Did you two fight?”

I sighed.

“I should’ve listened to you. He already likes someone else. I never should’ve gone after him.”

Elspeth smiled.

“I’d only heard that Leith was close to his childhood friend. Now that I’ve seen them together, I don’t think he

likes Tova that way.”

But the comments and Leith’s thoughts had both told me otherwise.

I stopped following Elspeth and found a quiet corner where I could scroll through my phone.

By the time the party ended, she texted me.

[Can you grab something from the basement for me?]

I looked up and realized all the guests had already left. Only the housekeepers remained, clearing the

reception room.

I headed downstairs.

Once I reached the basement, I texted Elspeth back.

[I’m here. What am I looking for?]

The door slammed shut behind me.

I flinched hard.

Then a voice filled my head.

[She came after me first.]

[She abandoned me first.]

A second later, Leith stepped out of the shadows.

“Leith? What are you doing here?!”

The comments erupted.

(Wait-did the male lead grab the WRONG girl?! Why is the villainess locked in the basement?]

[Oh, I get it! He’s finally making her pay for everything she did to him.]

[Seriously? I thought we were about to get a basement scene with the male lead and the heroine.]

Leith pinned me to the bed, and panic ripped through me. Tears spilled down my face as I struggled beneath him, terrified of what he might do next.

The moment he saw me crying, he froze. He reached out to wipe away a tear, but I kicked at him and choked out a sob.

“Let me go, Leith!”

“Elspeth will notice I’m gone. She’ll come looking for me!”
