I immediately looked away and walked quickly toward the subway entrance.

The whole way home, I kept turning Olivia’s words over in my mind.

I was still lost in thought when I looked up and saw Julian standing by the heavy oak front door of the Davis house.

A cigarette was pinched between his fingers.

“What is it?” I asked.

Julian stood there for a long time without speaking.

After a moment, he pressed the cigarette out against a stone carving on the portico and finally opened his mouth.

“Chloe, stop walking around like you’re the most tragic figure in the world. The Davis family owes you nothing.”

He looked at me, his voice cold.

“If anything, you’re the one who owes this family.”

I stopped in my tracks.

So he’d been waiting here just to lecture me.

A heavy hand struck my face.

My father’s voice crashed down, thick with rage.

“You shameless girl. Stand up straight.”
