The Screens Predict My Doom, I Rewrite The Script Chapter 08

It was late at night in London.

I was getting ready for bee when my phone suddenly rang.

It was an unfamiliar number from back home.

I hesitated for a moment, but ignored it.

It rang again.

On the third attempt, I answered. “Hello?”

“Zuri?” It was Mrs. Colon’s voice, thick with tears. “Zuri, it’s me…”

I remained silent for a few seconds. “Mrs. Colon, what do you want?”

A muffled sob came through the line. “Zuri, I’m sorry… I know everything now. I know about the pregnancy, and how you had to go through the procedure all by yourself… I’m so sorry…’

“How did you find out?” My voice was flat.

“Reese… Reese showed me. She brought me photos of you and Javier… She said you were out there living

loosely, and that she was the good daughter…”

Mrs. Colon was sobbing uncontrollably now. “I finally see how wrong I was… Please come back, okay? I’ll

make it up to you…”

I leaned against the headboard, watching the moonlight outside the window.

“Mrs. Colon, I don’t need you to make anything up to me.”

“Zuri…”

“Is there anything else? If not, I’m hanging up.

“Wait!” she panicked. “Your father knows he was wrong, too! He’s kicking Reese out! Please come home,

we’re your family…”

“You were never my family.”

I ended the call and blocked the number without a second thought.

Some people can never be forgiven.

Some homes can never be returned to.

It was only later that I learned what had actually happened back home during those few days.

Reese had finally lost her patience. While Javier was away in London, she had gone into his computer and found the photographs he had taken of me over the past five years.

Photos of me in my rented apartment, at school, by the beach; photos of me smiling, sleeping, and cooking.

She took them straight to Mr. and Mrs. Colon, claiming I had known all along that Javier was her fiancé, and that I had intentionally seduced him, gotten pregnant, and tried to steal him.

She wanted to destroy me.

But she didn’t expect Mrs. Colon’s reaction upon seeing those photos.

Mrs. Colon didn’t fly into a rage; she burst into tears.

It wasn’t out of anger, but out of pure heartache.

Because the girl in those pictures was smiling so genuinely. It was the only time I had ever looked happy.

For the very first time, Mrs. Colon realized just how much her biological daughter had suffered.

She began investigating my past.

She looked into Grandma’s illness, the incident at the club, how Javier had stepped in, the five years we spent in secret, the pregnancy, and the abortion documents.

She completely broke down.

Mr. Colon fell into a stunned silence.

They finally understood that the daughter they had ignored, scorned, and pushed away was the one who

actually needed their protection.

Meanwhile, Reese, the “daughter” they had pampered for twenty years, had been spinning a web of lies from

the very beginning.

Everything in the Colon family was falling apart.
