Summer break came. I went home to visit Grandma.

I was walking with her through the market when I saw Ayla.

She was pregnant, following my mom around as they bought groceries.

I had to look twice to make sure it was really her.

Grandma sighed and lowered her voice.

“After your sister failed to get into the academy, she didn’t want to retake the trials.”

“She got a boyfriend, but when her belly started showing, he abandoned her and ran off.”

“Your mother was furious and wanted to abort the baby.”

“But the pack doctor said she was too far along. It could damage her womb. She might not be able to have

children again after this.”

I couldn’t wrap my head around it. “Wait, I thought she had depression. When did she get a boyfriend?”

“Shh. That depression was an act.”

“Your mother said it would win sympathy from online strangers.”

I nodded slowly, finally understanding.

“Want to go say hi?”

“No point. I’m done with that family.”

I was about to turn and walk away when I heard someone call my name.

“Nina!”

It was Ethan.

He came out of nowhere, staring at me with this desperate excitement.

“You’re finally back… I missed you so much.”

He wasn’t the same person anymore. The confidence was gone. His shoulders were hunched, his cheeks sunken in. He looked… pathetic.

At his call, Ayla and Mom both turned to me.

They hurried over, and when they saw me, their mouths dropped open in surprise.

“Nina, why didn’t you tell me you were coming?” My mom wiped her hands on her apron and reached for

me:

I stepped back and gave her a cold look

“What? Can you finally tell me apart from my sister now?”

My mom glanced at Ayla, who was haggard, worn out, and then back at me.

“Of course I can. You two look so different now…

I answered her with a snort.

“Nina, it’s been so long. You still can’t forgive your mother?”

“This will never be over.”

“The damage has been done, and I’ll never forget it.”

My mom wouldn’t give up. She tried to grab my hand again.

“But you’re doing so well now…”

“Yeah. And the only reason I am is because my professors actually saw my work. Otherwise, you would’ve

taken everything from me.”

“The fact that I still call you ‘Mom’ is more than you deserve.”

“Don’t forget that I still have the right to press charges. So stay out of my way.

Ayla didn’t say a word the whole time. She just rubbed her belly and cried silently.

I softened my voice a little and turned to my mom.

“Didn’t you say she was the Chosen One?”

“Well, now she’s having a baby. Maybe she will have a Chosen One. That’s nice, isn’t it?”

As I walked away with Grandma on my arm, she asked me, “What Chosen One?”

I told her what my mom had said.

Grandma rolled her eyes. “That prophet. She got taken away years ago for running her mouth.”

I nearly laughed.

Later, I asked Grandma if she wanted to come north with me.

I didn’t expect her eyes to light up.

“Of course I do! I’ve never been anywhere that far away in my whole life.”

I took her hand happily. “I just found a great villa. The neighbor’s an old lady too. You won’t be bored, I promise.”

As we stepped onto the plane, I took one last look at the home I’d lived in for eighteen years.

Grandma held my hand and said, “Nina, wherever you go, Grandma will go with you.”

That was a promise my mom once made to Ayla

Now someone finally said it to me.
