The Ring Was Not For Me Chapter 02

The Ring Was Not For Me Chapter 02

His words were daggers, twisting in my heart.

A month ago, it was Ricardo’s birthday.

I had meticulously planned a party for him, even intending to accept his proposal that day.

My parents had canceled a multi-million dollar business deal and flown in from London just to meet him.

But when the appointed time came, Ricardo was completely unreachable.

The whiskey my father had specially brought sat on the table, the food I had cooked myself grew cold, and still, Ricardo didn’t show up.

I called him dozens of times and sent countless texts, all to no avail.

The next day, when I confronted him, he blew up at me.

“Tiffany, can’t you be a little more considerate? I got a last-minute notice to attend an emergency medical seminar in Chicago! Is my future less important than a meal? When did you become so selfish!”

From that moment on, Ricardo became a different person.

He no longer video-called me every day.

Three days, five days…

We saw each other less and less, the intervals growing longer and longer.

I thought he was just stressed and irritable from work and tried everything to console him.

I never imagined it was all a lie.

My fingers curled, my eyes stinging. I dug my nails into my palm, the sharp sting a welcome distraction from the tears threatening to fall.

But Ricardo wasn’t looking at me. He was impatiently stopping Sarah from drinking.

“What are you doing? You know you’re not feeling well. Why are you drinking?”

With that, he slid the cranberry juice the waiter had just brought over to Sarah.

My outstretched hand froze in mid-air.

Ricardo knew I was allergic to alcohol. For the past three years, whenever there was a party with drinks, he would always get me cranberry juice in advance.

It was a habit ingrained in him.

Today, he gave it to Sarah.

Ricardo glanced at me.

“If you want something to drink, order it yourself. Can’t you do one thing for yourself?”

The moment he finished,

Sarah burst out laughing, her face a mask of scorn.

“Tiffany, you’re so pathetic. And you’re just standing there taking it, hoping you can still win him back.”

From the moment Ricardo and I got together, Sarah had stuck to us like glue, impossible to shake off.

In the past, Ricardo had always kept his distance from her. Even though Sarah claimed they were just good buddies, he had publicly embarrassed her more than once.

So now, Sarah was intentionally getting back at me.

And Ricardo was using the same tactics he once used on her to torture me.

“Ricardo, why choose today to tell me?”

“Is it because you don’t want to marry me?”

Ricardo looked at Sarah and took her hand.

“Because Sarah is a better fit for me.”

“Her uncle is the Vice President of Stark Medical. He can pave the way for my career.”

“And you, what can you give me?”

I stared at Ricardo quietly.

“What if I said I can give you more than Sarah can?”

Ricardo, this is your last chance.

Seeing the uncertain expression on my face, Ricardo tightened his grip on his wine glass.

“You can’t compare to Sarah!”

“A cripple who can’t even hold a scalpel. How are you supposed to give me a family?”

His words were a slap in the face, pinning me to a public pillar of shame.

The stares of everyone around us felt like they were stripping me bare.

A year ago, Ricardo insisted on going skiing in Aspen. He was a beginner but recklessly tried to tackle a difficult slope to show off, and he went missing. I waited for a long time, and when he didn’t come back, I led a search party for him.

When I finally found him, I dragged him through a blizzard all by myself to find the rescue team. After that, my fingers were so severely frostbitten I could no longer hold a scalpel. The doctor even said the frostbite had caused permanent damage to my body, and it would be difficult for me to get pregnant in the future.

I clenched my fists tightly.

“Anyone else can put a price on me, Ricardo, but not you.”

But in the next second, a figure suddenly rushed out from the crowd.

With all her strength, she slapped me across the face.

“You evil bitch!”

“You’re useless, and you want to drag my son down with you!”

It was Ricardo’s mother. The boy with her, Dylan, immediately ran into Sarah’s arms, calling her “Mom.”

I grabbed him and pulled him over, staring at his innocent face.

He looked so much like Ricardo.

Dylan got scared and burst into tears, wailing loudly.

Mrs. Miller shoved me away.

“Get away! Don’t touch my grandson!”

“If anything happens to Dylan, I won’t let you off!”

Half of my face was burning, and a hard shove sent me sprawling. The cups and plates on the table overturned, splashing me with a mess of spilled drinks and food scraps.

Ricardo’s expression stiffened for a moment, then his voice turned cold and hard.

“Don’t play the victim, Tiffany. I never asked you to save me, so I don’t owe you a thing!”
