The Ring Was Not For Me Chapter 01

At a graduation party in a Boston rooftop bar, Ricardo’s close friend, Sarah, proposed a game she called “Truth Inquisition.”

Ricardo boasted he could make me break down in three sentences. Sarah raised the stakes, claiming one would be enough.

The friends around us didn’t think Ricardo would dare cross me. After all, he was the doting boyfriend who lived to please me, the guy who couldn’t even watch a game with his buddies without asking for my permission first. They all placed bets that he wouldn’t dare.

However, Sarah hid a smirk behind her hand, her eyes flashing triumphantly in my direction.

Ricardo met her gaze and spoke casually. His voice wasn’t loud, but his words landed like a bomb.

“Sarah and I have a son.”

The moment he said it, the entire terrace fell dead silent.

Everyone’s eyes snapped to me.

Some were waiting for tears, others for a full-blown meltdown.

But I simply held his gaze, my face a blank mask.

“So?”

Ricardo was clearly taken aback, not expecting me to be so calm.

The atmosphere grew awkward, and a few friends quickly tried to defuse the situation.

“You’re messing with us, right? This has to be about those kittens you two took in.”

“Right, Ricardo?”

Ricardo frowned, his tone impatient and cold.

“Don’t cover for me. You heard me. Our son—Sarah’s and mine—is almost a year old.”

“I said it because I’m not afraid of her making a scene.”

A year old?

That single phrase—a year old—roared in my head like a deafening siren.

Seeing my face instantly turn pale, Sarah smirked and sat down on Ricardo’s lap.

“It’s just a game, Tiffany. Don’t tell me you’re folding in the first round.”

“That would be too easy of a win for me.”

“But what’s the fun in winning without a prize? What do you think, Ricardo?”

Ricardo’s gaze followed hers, landing on the antique silver necklace around my neck.

He stubbed out the cigarette between his fingers and said nonchalantly,

“Tiffany, put your silver necklace on the table.”

I looked down at the faintly shimmering silver necklace.

It was a gift from my mother for my eighteenth birthday. It was my most prized possession, and I hadn’t taken it off since the day she’d given it to me.

I had told Ricardo how precious this necklace was to me.

And he had once sworn to me.

“Tiffany, when I graduate, I’ll buy you a real diamond!”

I had believed him without a doubt, but doing the math now…

At that time, their child would have just been born.

What was he even thinking, I wondered, when he made me that promise?

I stared at Ricardo, a sharp pain surging in my chest.

I’d once told him this necklace was more precious than my life.

But now, because Sarah had taken a liking to it, he was demanding I use it as a bet.

Seeing I wasn’t responding,

Ricardo’s dark eyes were fixed on me, a smirk playing on his lips.

“What, can’t bear to part with it?”

My fingers tightened instantly.

That small movement made Ricardo grin triumphantly.

As if deliberately provoking me,

He took off the Rolex watch from his wrist.

“Tiffany, since Sarah likes the necklace, don’t be so stingy.”

“I’ll go first.”

“Even though the one you gave me is a knockoff, it has to be worth a few bucks.”

The watch had barely touched the table before several friends snatched it up, passing it around.

“Damn, even for a fake, this thing is top-notch. The engraving is exquisite.”

“Ricardo, no wonder you wouldn’t let us see it no matter how much we begged.”

Ricardo basked in their admiration.

“I know you cherish that silver necklace.”

“But rules are rules.”

The smile hadn’t yet faded from Ricardo’s face.

I nodded.

Gritting my teeth, I tore the silver necklace from my neck, leaving a raw, red mark against my skin.

“Didn’t you say you could break me in three sentences? Continue.”

A grim look washed over Ricardo’s face.

“Fine. Let’s see how long you can keep this act up.”

Sarah impatiently urged him on.

I waited quietly for him as well.

Ricardo smiled, full of confidence.

“Last month, when your parents flew in from Europe to see you, during those ten hours you spent waiting for me, I was with Sarah and our son in the Hamptons. A little family trip to celebrate his first birthday.”
