The Petty Secretary Vs The Literal Sister Chapter 03

The Petty Secretary Vs The Literal Sister Chapter 03

Gavin said he’d handle it.

His idea of handling it, apparently, was Sloane posting a late-night selfie from the office on social media.

The caption read: [Some roles you can’t just walk away from to avoid gossip. Adults answer to responsibility, not emotions.]

In the corner of the photo, half of a man’s hand was visible.

The watch was Gavin’s usual one.

Their mutual friends jumped into the comments.

[Sloane, you work so hard. Gavin would be lost without you.]

[You two are the real soulmates in business.]

[Some people need to stop being so insecure. A man’s career comes first.]

I read every last one. Then I hit Like. And left a comment.

[What time did you clock out? Just wondering if the executive office of a publicly traded company has a habit of violating labor laws.]

Ten minutes later, the post disappeared.

Half an hour after that, Gavin called me. His voice was ice cold.

“Drew, what exactly do you want?”

“Protect workers’ rights.” I said.

“If your company has nothing to hide, I’ll happily file a formal complaint—under my real name.”.

I kept going. “Oh, and one more thing.”

“Sloane said adults talk about responsibility, not emotions.”

“So maybe you should pay her all the overtime she’s owed from the past three years.”

“After all, she practically appointed herself Chief Responsibility Officer.”

I could hear his teeth grinding.

“Don’t push this too far.”

I laughed. “Why are you upset again?”

“I’m just joking. Isn’t that everyone’s go-to line around here?”

The line went dead.

Not long after, Maren’s phone rang. It was Gavin.

She glanced at me before putting him on speaker.

His voice suddenly sounded warm and friendly again.

“Maren, does your sister have some kind of problem with me?”

“She’s turning this into a spectacle. People at the company are already talking. I’m stuck in the middle here.”

Maren took a deep breath.

“Why don’t you ask Sloane why she keeps posting things that make people get the wrong idea?”

Gavin hesitated. “That’s just how she is.”

“When we were building the company, we pulled all-nighters together all the time. That’s just how she’s always posted.”

Maren answered quietly. “Maybe I didn’t know before.”

“But I know now. And I don’t like it.”

His breathing grew heavier.

“Maren, you were never like this before. You used to be so understanding.”

I almost laughed out loud.

“Understanding.” In some people’s mouths, that word just means easy to push around.

Maren laughed too—I’ll give her that.

“Gavin, I used to love you. But that doesn’t mean I’m stupid.”

Complete silence.

I gave her a thumbs-up.

Her eyes turned red as she glared at me. But her back was straighter than it had ever been.
