The Night Before I Became His Wife, the Night He Became a Father Chapter 10

“Ivy?”

Damian called my name softly, disbelief in his voice.

He looked as if he thought everything in front of him was a dream, afraid that if he spoke too loudly, the dream would break and I would disappear again.

When I did not answer, he suddenly strode toward me as though he needed to confirm I was real.

But when he was still about fifteen feet away, Miles rushed forward and blocked his path.

“Move.”

Damian’s voice was icy, carrying the deadly stillness before a volcanic eruption.

He looked calm, but the veins bulging at his temples gave him away.

“Why should I?”

“Exactly. You still have the nerve to show up here?”

“What if he doesn’t move? No one here is obligated to cater to you.”

A group of tall, broad-shouldered teammates surged forward and surrounded Damian. The air turned explosive, as if a fight could break out at any second.

He really just would not stay gone.

I frowned and sighed inwardly.

It seemed some things would never stop haunting me unless I made them clear once and for all.

Seeing that Miles’s temper was about to flare again, I did not want his team’s big day to be ruined because of me.

“All right, enough. Calm down.”

I stood up and forced my way between two protective teammates.

“Ivy. It really is you.”

Damian’s eyes reddened at the corners. His breathing grew hot and uneven as he reached out in excitement, trying to pull me into his arms, but Miles slapped his hand away hard.

“I’m warning you. You can talk if you keep your hands to yourself.”

“If you reach for her again, whichever hand you use is the one I’ll rip off.”

With a helpless breath, I grabbed Miles again.

Then I shoved and herded the tense group of men back toward their booth.

I truly did not want much contact with Damian either, so I simply found a small table not far from Miles’s booth and stood beside it.

From beginning to end, Damian’s eyes never left me.

“You’re not dead.”

His eyes were filled with complicated emotions. After holding it in for a long time, he finally forced out those few words. They sounded like

an accusation, a statement, and a wounded complaint all at once.

I was already impatient. “So what?”

My question stunned him, and he fell into a frightening silence again.

After a long while, he said, “I was wrong.”

His fists slowly clenched. “I shouldn’t have lied to you. I shouldn’t have believed Nina.”

“But do you know what it was like for me, growing up in a family like mine? Since I was a kid, all I ever saw were people chasing power, sucking up, scheming against each other. There were too many gold diggers desperate to marry into my family. I was afraid…”

“If you were that guarded, then why didn’t you ever wonder whether Nina wanted a child with you for your money?”

I cut him off with a cold laugh.

Someone as smart as Damian had truly never suspected anything?

Or had he suspected it but refused to admit it?

Was it for the thrill of sneaking around, for the novelty of a side piece, or for that childish male fantasy that he was always more attractive than money?

Damian frowned and did not dare meet my eyes.

Of course he understood the meaning beneath my question.

Seeing him like that, I suddenly found the whole thing pointless.

So-called devotion was nothing but unwillingness to accept defeat.

“You have nothing to say, do you? Good. Then listen to me.”

There was no emotion in my voice as I poured out everything I had slowly come to understand during this time.

“You never faced this relationship honestly yourself, yet you selfishly demanded that I give you all my sincerity.”

“You acted like God and set up some test for me. Did you think that because you were a billionaire heir, you were above everyone else, and women had to devote themselves to you without wanting anything in return?”

“Did you ever consider how I felt? All you cared about was whether you might lose out.”

“You thought that once you told me the truth, I had to forgive you? That I had to be generous and tolerant, let Nina stay on the side while I played the understanding wife at home, and let you have both of us? Damian, what do you think you are, some kind of prince? This isn’t a monarchy.”

“And as for that so-called wedding of the century you put on not long ago, ask yourself honestly: was it really because you couldn’t live without me, or was it because you couldn’t stand the fact that you, Damian, were the one who got dumped?”
