The Night Before I Became His Wife, the Night He Became a Father Chapter 06

The next time Damian saw Ivy Quinn, it was at her memorial service.

Her delicate face was sealed behind the glass of a photo frame, beautiful and fragile.

Both of her parents were gone. Over the past few years, she had spent her days and nights working, then taking care of Damian, leaving her with almost no friends.

That was why the memorial chapel looked so cold and empty now.

Miles Grant, a broad-shouldered man over six feet tall, was there as her family representative, kneeling at the side of the memorial chapel as he lit candles for her.

He had been the rescue captain during the boating accident at sea three years ago.

After Ivy was rescued and hospitalized, she happened to hear that Miles’s father had a rare illness and was being treated at the same hospital.

The astronomical medical bills had nearly wiped Miles out.

Without a second thought, Ivy took out the wedding fund she had saved for herself and helped Miles through the crisis.

In her words, it was not only to thank Miles for saving her, but also to make up for the regret she still carried over her own father.

But to Miles, it was a life-changing act of kindness.

“You still have the nerve to show up?”

He stepped sideways to block Damian, anger flaring in his eyes.

Damian simply moved around him and said in a voice so low it was almost inaudible, “I’m her husband.”

“You think you deserve that title?”

Miles swung his fist in fury, landing a punch at the corner of Damian’s mouth.

A bruise rose almost instantly.

But Damian seemed unable to feel pain. He swayed, barely steadied himself, and kept walking toward the table where Ivy’s urn should have been.

“Stop right there!”

Miles grew even angrier. He grabbed Damian by the collar and laid into him without holding back, landing several heavy punches in a row.

Blood sprayed from Damian’s mouth.

He began coughing violently.

His face turned even paler. He gasped for air and did not fight back at all, almost as if he wanted to be beaten.

His eyes were hollow as he tried to climb back up, only for Miles to kick him hard in the chest.

Another mouthful of blood came out.

Damian got up, got hit again, and repeated the cycle until even Miles’s

jaw tightened with disgust.

“Are you going to keep hitting me?” Damian asked hoarsely.

When Miles did not move, Damian let out a low laugh, though there was no humor in his eyes.

He staggered to his feet and stumbled to the memorial table.

But the table was empty.

His whole body jolted.

He turned around. “Where are her ashes?”

Miles looked at him with open contempt. “Scattered in the ocean.”

Damian lunged forward the next second and grabbed Miles by the collar, his voice shaking. “What did you say?”

“I said Ivy’s ashes were scattered into the ocean right away.”

Miles raised his voice.

“During her brief final rally that day, the only thing she asked me to do was that.”

“She said she didn’t want some disgusting piece of trash clinging to her even after she was gone.”

The last few words were squeezed through his teeth.

Damian staggered back half a step.

Miles slapped his hand away.

Before leaving, Miles stopped again.

With his back to Damian, who stood in the chapel looking as if his soul had been hollowed out, Miles said quietly, “I know she didn’t want to settle old scores anymore, but I can’t swallow this.”

“Did you know Ivy couldn’t swim? Back then, when she fell overboard, that woman Nina kicked her down into the water just to push herself back up and survive.”

“How do you think you two survived? You survived at Ivy’s expense.”

“Ivy was kind enough not to hold it against her, but you kept calling yourself Ivy’s husband while sleeping with the woman who hurt her.”

“How could you ever be worthy of the love Ivy gave you?”
