The Man Who Ruined My 22nd, the Customer Who Wanted a Steamed Bun Chapter 06

The next time I saw them, they were walking back with bags in both hands.

“Maisie, I thought you were just getting an ice cream cone. Why does it look like you cleaned out the convenience store?”

Maisie grinned at me. “Mommy, Mr. Mercer said I could have whatever I wanted!”

She hugged the bags to her chest and proudly displayed her treasures.

At the very bottom of the haul were more than thirty premium chocolate ice cream bars.

“He said these are for everyone. Daddy, Mommy, and me. I told him you don’t like them, but he said you just can’t bring yourself to spend the money and actually love them.”

I looked at the ice cream bars and shook my head.

As Maisie carried her treasures upstairs, I picked up the bag of bars and handed it right back to Elliot.

“Thank you for your generosity, but you should take these back.”

Elliot’s voice turned careful. “Keep them. I remember you used to like these.”

I set the bag down and looked at him.

“I told you before. I hate the crushed nuts inside.”

“I told you many times.”

“But you never seemed to hear me.”

Elliot was left speechless, a bitter pang of regret twisting in his chest like lemon juice.

After a long, agonizing silence, he finally muttered,

“I’m sorry.”

My phone rang.

The caller ID said, Honey.

I did not know whether he saw it.

Honestly, I did not care.

“Hi, honey. Maisie’s already back.”

“Yeah, an old acquaintance stopped by.”

Elliot’s expression shifted slightly.

“Okay, I know. Drive safe.”

After I hung up, I gave Elliot my final warning.

“Elliot, I don’t want my husband to feel uncomfortable because of you. We cut all ties six years ago. I am living a great, happy life now. I expect you to never disrupt my life again.”

Elliot opened his mouth to speak but swallowed his words, the light in his eyes slowly dying out.

He nodded, turned around, and walked out of the breakfast shop.

But then he suddenly stopped again.

Past his shoulder, I saw another face I had not seen in years.

“Vivienne,” he said. “What are you… doing here?”
