The Mafia’s Stand-In Bride Chapter 08

The Mafia’s Stand-In Bride Chapter 08

“Lily, are you crazy!”

Layla pulled Lorenzo into a protective hug, furious.

“I told you this woman doesn’t deserve you! All these years you’ve treated her like your precious treasure, what did you get for it?

“Look at this now! She’s lived the good life with you all these years, gotten everything/she wanted and now she just wants to walk out and divorce you?

“Fine, you want a divorce, sign this. You won’t get a single penny from our family!”

As Layla spoke, she gestured to the document laid out on the table ages ago.

I picked it up and skimmed it.

I was so angry I almost started laughing.

Not only did they demand I leave with nothing, they even made me pay back every cent Lorenzo spent on me over the years-a full million dollars.

I’d never heard of anything more ridiculous.

What was even funnier, Lorenzo had that same “this is obvious” look on his face.

“Lily, if you behave now, apologize properly to my mom and Maya, I’ll let you come back. In a year or so, I’ll throw you another wedding, I swear.”

I sneered.

“So I’m supposed to grovel and thank you for your pity and charity, right, Don Lorenzo?”

“What kind of tone is that?” Lorenzo furrowed his brow. “Do you really want a divorce?”

I didn’t answer.

I slowly tore the papers in my hand into tiny pieces, one by one, and scattered them into the air.

The bits of paper fluttered down all around us.

Lorenzo and I stared at each other, dead in the eye.

“I wasn’t planning on taking anything to begin with. But since you all keep pushing me, there are

some things I’m actually gonna take, no matter what.”

“Lily!”

Ignoring Lorenzo’s gritted, furious call, I locked my gaze directly on Maya.

“What are you doing?” Maya, spooked by my stare, stepped back slowly.

I sneered, grabbed a handful of her hair roughly, and slapped her hard across the face several

times.

“Aren’t you so cocky? You swapped my photo, intentionally ruined my wedding dress, and kept provoking me on purpose?

“For a man, you willingly became the homewrecker who crawled into someone else’s marriage. You’re so pathetic.

“But fine, you can have what you want-this rotten man isn’t worth anything to me anymore.”

The whole room went dead silent instantly.

I’d always been a gentle, obedient little thing in front of them. This was the first time I’d ever shown such a fierce side.

After a long moment, Lorenzo finally spoke.

He reached out to grab my hand.

“Alright, that’s enough, Lily. Come home with me.’

I wrenched my hand out of his grasp sharply.

“Oh, right. Did I ever tell you, Lorenzo? I’m pregnant.”

To make sure he believed me, I walked to the dresser, dug out my old pregnancy test report, and slapped it hard against his chest.

“I’m two months along.”

He froze first, then his face melted into shock and wild joy.

“Re-really? You’re actually pregnant!”

Layla heard this, immediately snatched the report out of Lorenzo’s hand, read it over and over

again, and burst into delight.

“Oh my God! Sweetheart, come home with us right now, don’t get worked up, you’ll hurt the

baby…”

Maya, who’d been clinging to Layla just a minute earlier, was completely forgotten by everyone.

I watched their shift in attitude and felt nothing but bitter irony.

The Vitale family genes were apparently wired for late childbirth. When Layla was pregnant with Lorenzo, it took her ten years of trying to conceive.

She’d been obsessed with the baby in my belly, and Lorenzo had also been desperate to have his

own child early on.

Layla had talked about wanting a grandson more than once. I’d been trying so hard to get pregnant

just to win her acceptance.

When I found out the baby was finally here, I was ecstatic.

I thought I’d finally get to be Lorenzo’s wife, fair and square. I thought I’d actually get to be happy.

Turned out I was just too naive.

“Hold your horses.” I smiled softly. “You all go on ahead. I don’t feel like coming home right now.

“Lily…”

Lorenzo tried to say more, but I cut him off cold. “I don’t like being forced by anyone. If you want this baby to be okay, do what I say.”

The two of them had no choice, so they left after repeating their concerns a thousand times.

No sooner had they walked out the door than I started packing my bags, grabbed a taxi, and headed

straight for the airport.

Right before I boarded the plane, I sent the abortion report to Lorenzo.
