The Luna Who Heard Cruel Secrets Chapter 02 I Started Pulling Away

“The Alpha’s definitely annoyed she woke him up.”

“Who wants someone they don’t even like clinging to in their sleep?”

“Doesn’t Luna realize how unwelcome she is? She still won’t stop sticking to him.‘

I lowered my head, my eyes burning.

Listening to the servants‘ thoughts, I wanted to disappear into a crack in the floor.

Just then, Rhett’s voice came down from above me. There was something in it I couldn’t quite read.

“We didn’t finish things last night. Do you want to continue tonight?”

He still wanted to sleep with me?

I thought back to last night–to the stiffness in his body, the way every movement of his had felt forced.

It was like being doused in ice water.

I understood with painful clarity that he had never truly wanted it.

He was only doing what a mate was supposed to do.

Nothing more.

At the thought, I hurriedly shook my head, my voice tightening.

“Not yet… maybe later. I’m still a little nervous.”

Rhett’s eyes locked onto me.

Deep in those amber irises, it looked as though something fiery was about to surge forward- only to be dragged back again.

A long silence followed.

Then he finally said, his voice low and rough, “Fine. Whatever you want.”

I quietly let out the breath I’d been holding.

But at the same time, something inside me caved in.

I got ready in silence.

Breakfast had already been laid out by the servants, and Rhett sat across from me, motionless, watching me eat.

His stare felt like a strip of heated iron pressed to my back.

I could only force myself to chew faster.

“Aren’t… aren’t you eating?”

“I’m not hungry.”

I nodded and dropped my gaze back to the table.

But in my heart, I was wondering whether he had already grown so tired of me that he couldn’t even stand sharing a meal.

The food in my mouth turned bitter.

Each bite became harder to swallow than the last.

When it was time to go, he moved to take me to the Pack theater as usual.

Then the servants‘ thoughts came rushing into my mind again.

“Today’s the day of the Pack council meeting. The Alpha is finally going to meet the White Wolf.”

“I can’t wait to see them together. A powerful Alpha and a mysterious White Wolf–what a match.”

“They’re the real fated pair. This Luna was just an accident.”

“If the Alpha bonds with the White Wolf, our Pack will only grow stronger.”

My chest tightened, heavy and aching.

Of course.

The White Wolf was said to be the Moon Goddess’s daughter.

She must be beautiful, powerful, extraordinary in every way.

How could I possibly compare?

If Rhett fell for her, it would only be natural. It would be fate.

When he saw me still standing there, he frowned slightly.

“Get in.”

I didn’t move.

“You should go handle Pack business. I’m not feeling very well today. I’ll head to the theater later on my own.”

Instead of backing off, he walked over.

That sharp, distinctly Alpha gaze swept across my face. He lowered his head slightly, as if trying to catch the smallest change in my scent.

Then he said, “You’re upset.”

“Because of what I said just now?”

I looked up and carefully arranged a blank, harmless expression on my face, like someone who had spent years learning how to hide.

“How could I be?”

What was there to be angry about?

All I had done was finally realize, through the servants‘ thoughts, that I had been making a fool of myself this whole time.

I didn’t want to keep doing this.

I needed to let Rhett go.

More than that, I needed to let myself go.

Rhett clearly didn’t believe me. He stepped closer, and the pressure rolling off him made me shrink back without meaning to.

“Then why won’t you let me take you?”

I dropped my eyes and lied badly enough that even I could hear it.

“I just think… maybe we both need a little space.”

Rhett froze.

His amber eyes widened ever so slightly, as if I had just said something impossible.

For a few seconds, he said nothing.

Then his throat moved once.

“…Fine. I’ll pick you up from the theater tonight. We’ll have dinner.”

Without waiting for an answer, he turned, got into the black SUV, and drove off.

I stood at the entrance and watched the car grow smaller and smaller until it disappeared around the bend in the road.

Then one final needle–sharp thought from a servant drove straight into my head:

“Don’t wait. The Alpha is having dinner with the White Wolf tonight. He’s not coming back.”
