The Love Missing From Summer Chapter 03

The Love Missing From Summer Chapter 03

My eyes went cold as I stared straight at Silas.

“You told her to come?”

Briar Sutton could not possibly know my address.

Silas stood beside her and avoided my gaze.

“Tessa Calder, Briar isn’t the kind of person you think she is.”

“There is a misunderstanding between you two. You should clear it up…”

I laughed from sheer anger.

“I spent two weeks on an event proposal, and she deliberately deleted my name from it. You call that a misunderstanding?”

I had been in charge of the proposal. Briar was supposed to assist.

I worked late nights to finish it. Then she deleted my edit history and submitted the plan as her own.

I confronted her directly, but I could not produce proof.

The whole thing caused a scene at the company.

“Tessa, you can’t bully me just because I’m new.”

“That proposal was clearly mine…”

Briar’s eyes reddened. She stopped herself like she was too wronged to continue.

“Forget it. You’re Silas’s girlfriend. I don’t want things to get ugly with you, and I don’t want you two fighting because of me.”

“Let’s just say it was my fault. I’ll apologize to you.”

Obvious pity flashed through Silas’s eyes.

“Briar, I know you. The truth is the truth.”

“You don’t need to make yourself suffer because of me.”

Silas did not believe me.

He believed Briar Sutton.

Then he looked at me.

“Tessa Calder, apologize to Briar. No one will blame you.”

The last ache in my heart vanished.

I became strangely calm.

“Silas Whitcomb, I’ll say it again. We are over.”

“Now take your new girlfriend and get out of my apartment.”

Briar trembled and let tears fall, fragile and pitiful.

She clutched Silas’s sleeve and shrank behind him.

Silas looked at me with cold sarcasm.

“Tessa Calder, you’re threatening me with a breakup? You think that will make me give in?”

“You’re impossible.”

He took Briar’s hand and walked out.

The door slammed shut.

I collapsed onto the couch, drained.

My mom called right then.

“Tessa, are you really coming home? Did something happen?”

“Nothing. I handed in my resignation. I’ll come home once I finish the handover in the next two days.”

“Did you and Silas have a fight?”

“We didn’t have a fight. I broke up with him.”

I had already been thinking about switching companies.

After what happened with Briar, I resigned.

My manager thought Briar was a lucky find and approved it quickly.

My mom went quiet for two seconds.

“You broke up… If you’ve thought it through, that’s all that matters.”

“Coming home is good too. Your father and I won’t have to keep worrying that you’re being mistreated out there.”

Tears pricked my eyes.

“Mom, don’t worry about me.”

“I’ve been looking at jobs lately. There are plenty of good opportunities back home too…”

“I’m not worried about that, honey. Just don’t push yourself too hard.”

My throat tightened, and I could not speak.

I thought I could spend my last two days at the company in peace.

But Briar Sutton did not let me.

That night after work, the office rumor mill exploded.

Briar had posted a video on Instagram and tagged half our coworkers.

The person in the video was Silas Whitcomb.

His face was serious. He did not look like he was joking.

“I’ve been Tessa Calder’s boyfriend for four years. I know what she gets like when she’s jealous.”

“I saw her go after Briar after hours and delete files from Briar’s project folder. Briar doesn’t deserve to be bullied by someone senior to her.”
