Wyatt’s heart hammered like thunder.

A violent, sickening wave of loss and terror swallowed him whole.

At that moment, Hayley pushed the door open.

“Wyatt! You’re awake!”

Wyatt lunged at her as if she were his last lifeline, grabbing her shoulders.

“Where’s Cora? Where is Cora Dawson!”

Hayley was utterly petrified by his outburst.

His fingers dug into her shoulder blades until she cried out in pain.

“What Cora? Wyatt, I don’t know her!”

Wyatt’s face was ashen. He didn’t bother with anything else. He bolted from the hospital room, drove home,

and raced to the safe.

He punched in the code with trembling fingers, muttering over and over-

“Marriage certificate… our marriage certificate…”

The safe beeped open.

Inside, there was nothing but a single high school graduation photo.

Boom-

The world tilted and spun.

He grabbed the photo, and his eyes flew wide open.

In the picture, the girl who should have been standing beside him-had vanished.

“This… how is this possible…”

He refused to believe Cora had the ability to orchestrate such a flawless conspiracy with his mother and Hayley.

“Ugh-!”
Wyatt clutched his head, slid down the wall, and sat slumped on the floor, his face completely drained of/ –

color.

Suddenly, a thought struck him. He bolted out the door, drove straight to City Hall, and stood breathless at

the clerk’s window.

When he spoke, his voice was shaking.

“Could you please check the marital status of Wyatt Pierce?”

The clerk verified his ID, checked the computer, and then looked up at him.

“Sir, the system shows your marital status as ‘single.”

Wyatt was completely shattered.

Just a car crash.

He woke up, and the rules of the entire world had changed. It was as if, in these ten years, Cora Dawson had simply never stepped into his life.
