The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 20

The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 20

In the days that followed, Julian really did stop showing up.

Instead, Asher began showing up by her side every day.

He drove her to set, brought her back to her apartment after filming, and surprised her every single day.

Sometimes, she would open the car door and find the entire back seat filled with flowers.

Sometimes, when she returned to the apartment and pushed open the door, she would find a candlelit dinner waiting for her.

Clara had not felt this way in a very long time.

She and Julian had been married for five years, but they had spent more time apart than together.

He was a lawyer. When work consumed him, he could go days without coming home. She was an actress, and once filming began, she could disappear for months at a time.

She had once thought marriage was supposed to be like that.

But Asher showed her another possibility.

So this was what it felt like when someone prepared small surprises for you every day.

That cold apartment suddenly seemed to have warmth again.

Until that day.

The words “tax evasion” hit like a bomb.

When Clara saw the news, she was on set.

Blackwood Group had been reported for suspected large-scale tax evasion, and the IRS and federal investigators had already opened an inquiry.

Her ears rang, and her mind went blank.

She thought of Julian’s old methods.

It was him. It had to be him.

His legal team was the most powerful in D.C., and his resources and connections were impossible to

measure.

He had once said that power outranked money, and he happened to be exactly the kind of man with deep, tangled ties to that power.

In the days that followed, Asher grew busier and busier. He still came to see her as usual, but dark shadows had already appeared beneath his eyes.

Clara became more and more restless.

She did not understand how much longer Julian planned to keep haunting her life.

So she took the initiative and asked to meet him.

At the café, Julian arrived quickly.

He looked exhausted too, but the moment he saw her, he still tried to force a smile.

“I didn’t expect the next time we met to be because you wanted to plead his case.”

Clara looked at him and suddenly found it almost laughable.

“I’m not here to plead his case.”

“You reported him. He has his own legal team to handle that. I just think doing this is meaningless.”

The smile on Julian’s face froze.

“Meaningless?” he repeated.

“Yes. Meaningless.”

Julian felt as if someone had gripped his heart hard.

He had done so much and spent so much effort just to make her look at him once.

But now she was telling him that none of it meant anything.

He looked at her, his voice trembling.

“You kept saying there was something between Wendy and me. What about you? I heard you and Asher have

known each other since childhood. You two-”

He did not finish.

Clara’s eyes swept toward him, cold as ice.

Julian stopped and panicked.

“That’s not what I meant. I misspoke.”

He took a deep breath and softened his voice.

“Even if you really have feelings for him, I don’t care. As long as you come back to me, we can go back to the

way things were.”

Clara stood.

“I asked you here only to tell you to stop doing these pointless things.”

“I will never turn back.”

Her words landed with finality, and she turned to leave.

Julian sat where he was and watched her back.

Only one thought remained in his mind.

If he could not keep her heart, then he would keep her by his side first.

The instant Clara walked out of the café, a sharp pain struck the back of her neck.

Everything went black.
