It didn’t take long for the room to fill with the stench of sweat and cheap perfume.

Chloe rubbed her shoulder against his. “Let me stay, Jack. It’s almost dawn.”

Jack furrowed his brow. “We had a deal. C’mon, out you go, hurry.”

“It’s freezing,” she pouted, pushing herself up to leave. Her gaze landed on the nightstand. “Oh, this is gorgeous. Is it a gift for me?” She reached for the ring.

“No,” Jack’s voice was flat and firm, “that belongs to my mate.”

Chloe scoffed and wrapped the bedsheet around herself. “Your missing mate? C’mon. She bailed and left the whole pack laughing at you, and you’re still hung up on her? Look at me, I’m right here!”

For three years, the entire pack thought I was a traitor who’d abandoned them.

Jack had spun the perfect story. An unstable Omega wolf who couldn’t handle the pressure of being an Alpha’s mate, and vanished without a trace. He’d said we couldn’t let anyone know the invisibility potion existed—it was too dangerous.

“I really love you, Jack,” Chloe murmured, trying to climb back onto his lap.

He shoved her away hard, rough and unforgiving. “Get out.”

The door clicked shut. Jack lit a cigarette, the ember glowing bright in the dark. He picked up the ring and twisted it between his fingers.

“Anna? Are you here?” His voice softened suddenly. “Don’t be mad about what they say, I don’t care about any of it. You’re my Luna. My destiny. It’s always been you. Only you.”

His words used to make me cry happy tears.

Now I just crouched on the floor, staring at him for the longest time.

“I miss you. I love you.” The cigarette in his fingers trembled slightly. “Just wait a little longer. Once the antidote is done, I’ll mark you.”

Liar.

A single tear tracked down my cheek.

I couldn’t take it anymore, and slipped out of the room.
