I lay on the bed as hushed voices drifted in from outside the door. Adrian was speaking with the doctor. 

“Hypnotic manipulation?” His voice gave nothing away. 

“The symptoms line up, but the tests all came back normal.” 

“Can anything be done?” 

The doctor paused. “If this is caused by deep psychological suggestion, there’s not much we can do medically.” 

“Unless the patient realizes it on their own, treatment is 

unlikely to work.” 

Their voices faded as footsteps approached. 

The door opened. Adrian walked in and sat beside the bed. 

“Mr. Whitmore, I’m sorry for the trouble,” I said softly, my 

face pale. 

“I know how I look. Ugly. Plain. Hard to look at.” 

“But I… I don’t want to be humiliated in public again.” 

“You don’t need to apologize.” He looked at me, his tone calm. 

“Elise, you’re very beautiful.” 

“Who told you that you’re not?” 

My lashes trembled as I looked up at him. 

Sunlight slanted through the window, falling across his

Before Adrian left, his phone buzzed.

The sound of his footsteps faded.

slowly lifting. 

Half an hour later. 

I opened my chat with Mr. A and transferred all fifty thousand 

back to him. 

[This is what I earned from tutoring. Take it for now.]

meet tomorrow?] 

There was a long silence. Finally, his messages popped up. 

[I have an event at your university tomorrow afternoon.] 

[It ends at four. I’ll wait for you at the gate.] 

I replied: (Okay.] 

Back in the dorm, I deleted every trace of the transfer and 

meet–up plans, keeping only his final message. 

Then I casually tossed my phone onto the bed and went into 

the bathroom. 

When I came out, Blair was sitting on my bed. 

She was practically vibrating with manic, barely contained 

excitement. 

In one hand she gripped my phone. In the other, her own- open to the top headline on Crestwood University’s homepage.

It was obvious–she’d pieced together who he really was. 

When she saw me, she quickly hid the calculation in her eyes. 

“Elise! Your online boyfriend asked to meet tomorrow?” 

“Yeah.” 

“That’s perfect! I’ll do your makeup tomorrow. I guarantee he’ll fall for you at first sight!” 

I hesitated. “But I’ve been using your photos… When he sees the real me, he’s bound to be disappointed.” 

“If he truly likes you, looks won’t matter.” 

Blair’s voice was smooth and coaxing. “Or do you plan to keep lying to him forever?” 

I shook my head. “Of course not.” 

“That’s more like it.” Blair leaned in, her eyes locking onto 

mine. 

Deep within her pupils, something swirled–like a strange, 

dark vortex. 

“Just to be absolutely safe, don’t message him anymore before tomorrow. You might slip up. Let me hold onto this account 

for now.” 

I lowered my eyes, subtly avoiding her gaze. “Okay.” 

After all, the account I used to talk to Adrian was an alt. 

I let her log in and went along as she changed the verified identity details. 

After that, Blair climbed back onto her bed, humming to 

herself.
