The Godfather’s Last Regret: He Never Knew Her Chapter 08

Vanessa’s composure cracked. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Damon’s voice went cold. “I told you the jokes from the letters. You didn’t recognize them. You said they weren’t even funny.”

Vanessa couldn’t explain. She just cried and lied. “I forgot. Who remembers jokes from ten years ago?”

“I do.” Damon pushed her away. “Stop lying. I know everything.”

The jokes that got him through the dark days still echoed in his head. He still smiled when he thought of them.

The person in the letters said those jokes were hilarious. Said she’d remember them forever.

Damon had tested Vanessa so many times. She never knew a single one.

She stole what wasn’t hers.

Just thinking about it made Damon’s blood boil.

But he didn’t want to deal with that now.

All he wanted was to keep me.

Even if I left him when he needed me most.

Even if I gave up halfway.

As long as I stayed by his side like before.

Listening to Damon accuse Vanessa, I just wanted to laugh.

Now he doesn’t care about the life debt? Doesn’t care about true love?

What is this?

A prodigal son returning? A sudden awakening?

Damon looked at me with certainty. “I know you’ve been waiting for me to cave. I was too proud before. I’ll change. For you.”

Vanessa glared at me with bitter resentment, terrified I’d take him back.

The family elders who’d watched me grow up all looked at Damon disapprovingly.

But no one said anything.

I knew they’d respect whatever choice I made.

Even if I forgave Damon, they’d just sigh in disappointment and keep supporting me.

Everyone knew I’d chased Damon for ten years.

Everyone thought that if he just lowered his head a little, I’d forgive him instantly.

But I can’t do it.

I won’t become as pathetic as Damon.

I pulled my hand away from his reach. “You made your decision. Don’t regret it. Otherwise, you’ll just be a joke.”

Damon’s words got stuck in his throat. He couldn’t say a thing.

I looped my arm through Lorenzo’s. “Let’s go. Everyone’s waiting inside.”

I didn’t give Damon another glance. All I could think about was finishing this wedding so I could take back what my parents had stolen from them.

I’d been so unwilling all these years.

My parents were murdered by my own uncles. Their business stolen. And I’d kept Damon close as my partner, thinking we’d reclaim everything together.

Until three days ago. When I finally saw the truth.

Better to rely on myself than on any man.

If the only way to get my parents’ shares was to get married, then who cares who the groom is?

Damon stood there frozen. My words replayed in his head.

Had all his persistence these years been nothing but a joke?

Vanessa grabbed at him. “Damon, even Sophia doesn’t want you now. Don’t you get it? She gave up on you once. She’ll give up on you again.”

Damon flinched. He shoved Vanessa away and yelled at her.

“You’re worse! You’ve been passed around more times than a joint! What the hell are you?”

Vanessa’s mouth hung open. No words came out.

Damon had never brought up her past before. Because he was afraid of losing her.

But now he was using it as a weapon.

Vanessa panicked. She clutched him. “That was all in the past. I came back to you.”

Damon laughed bitterly. “You came back because you had three kids overseas for some rich guy, couldn’t even make it as a mistress, and had nowhere else to go. So you came home for me to take the fall.”
