The Girl He Left Behind: Now a Billionaire’s Wife Chapter 07

The Girl He Left Behind: Now a Billionaire’s Wife Chapter 07

I was sitting on Calebs balcony, a glass of iced tea in my hand, watching the sunset paint the sky over Central Park. For the first time in months, I felt a sense of peace

I picked up my phone, scrolled to Andrew’s contact, and held my thumb over the delete button. I thought of the five years we’d spent together, the house, the plans. It all felt like a movie I had watched about someone else’s life. I pressed Deleteand then Confirm.A small, insignificant action that felt like severing the last anchor to my past

What’s so funny?Caleb asked, coming out onto the balcony with a bowl of strawberries

Nothing,I said, smiling. Just cleaning out my contacts.”

He sat down next to me, his presence warm and solid. You know,he said, popping a strawberry into his mouth, in tenth grade, during that disastrous production of Romeo and Juliet, you were Juliet and I was stage crew. I spent the entire run just watching you from the wings. You were so luminous.”

I laughed, poking him in the cheek. You were a menace. You almost dropped a sandbag on

Romeo’s head.”

He was a terrible actor,Caleb said with a grin. I was doing everyone a favor.”

The doorman buzzed up. Mr. Lester, there’s an Andrew Scott here to see Ms. Fuller. He’s not

on the list.”

My stomach tightened. Caleb’s smile vanished. He spoke into the intercom, his voice firm. Send him up.”

A few minutes later, Andrew stood in the doorway of the apartment. He looked terrible. His suit was rumpled, his hair was a mess, and his eyes were wild. He saw me, and a desperate hope flooded his face. Then he saw Caleb

next to me, his arm

standing next to

protectively on the back of my chair

resting

Gabby,Andrew said, his voice cracking. We

need to talk.”

There’s nothing to talk about, Andrew,I said, my voice even. I stood up and walked towards him, Caleb a silent shadow behind me. This is Caleb Lester. My fiancé.”

I held up my left hand. The ring sparkled under

the lights

Andrew stared at the ring, then at Caleb, his face a mixture of disbelief and contempt. Fiancé? Gabby, don’t be ridiculous. Who is this

guy? Some clown you picked up?”

Caleb stepped forward, extending a hand. Caleb Lester,he said, his voice pleasant but edged with steel. Founder and CEO of Lester Global Holdings. You might have heard of my family? We develop most of the real estate on the East Coast. And you are?”

Andrew looked like he’d been slapped. You’reyou’re lying,he stammered, looking at me. Gabby, he’s lying to you. This is some kind of joke.”

It’s not a joke, Andrew,I said, my patience

gone

Caleb just smiled, a slow, predatory smile. He pulled me to him, his hand sliding to the back of my neck, and kissed me. It wasn’t a gentle kiss. It was a statement. A declaration of

ownership that was meant entirely for Andrew

When he pulled away, standing there, his face

Andrew was just

ashen, his hands

shaking. A glass display case next to him held a collection of antique maps. His hand shot out, knocking it over. The glass shattered on the

marble floor

Gabby, no,he whispered, his eyes filling with

tears. Please. Come back to me. We can

pretend this never happened. Just come home.”

He looked so broken, so pathetic, I almost felt

a flicker of pity. But it was gone as quickly as

it came

He couldn’t accept

accept reality. He

stumbled

backward, tripping over his own feet, and scrambled out of the apartment, a mess of

man fleeing a life he had singlehandedly destroyed.
